Is it necessary to strip nitro?

My partscaster is getting a re-do. I shot it 2 years ago with Mohawk nitro...sand sealer, toner, and approx 15 coats of clear. Other than the color choice and level of gloss, the paint is dead even and smooth as glass. I know that I can strip it with acetone in about 10-15 minutes. But is that necessary? If I sand it with 320 I still should have a really smooth and even surface that's got some bite for nitro primer and the new color.

Thoughts?

As long as you spray it with nitro again you dont have to strip it. You dont have to worry about it biting, the new nitro will melt into the old. Just watch out that you dont get the finish too thick cause it can crack later.

I agree with Shepard. If you are refinishing with something other than nitro, it should come off.

Thanks....it's getting refinished in nitro and I wanted to retain the underlying smooth surface.
