marshman April 9th, 2012, 02:51 PM The band has decided we need to learn I Want You Back from the Jackson 5, and I just gotta say that once the bassline fell under my fingers (which took a while, even with some very good tab) I am just amazed at how sublime that line is. Just so happy, bouncy, and downright PEFECT for that groove.
Gotta be a reason that no matter how much Zep, Skynyrd, Rush and SRV I listen to, the Motown station on the XM is the one that gets most play in my car.
Tommy Biggs April 10th, 2012, 10:31 AM Very cool. i always wanted to do that song- but our bass player ain't never getting there. What tab did you use? I'm due for a challenge - something that is a break away from guitar.
max_twang April 10th, 2012, 11:00 AM Nice. I love to play 60's and 70's R&B. Some of my favorite music.
Jakedog April 10th, 2012, 04:44 PM I Want You Back is one of my top five favorite bass lines of all time, and might be number one. And yes, it is a BLAST to play. Way too much fun.

How can you tell anything over that string noise?
That's really shocking. I had to bail.

It was easy. I guess I was not bothered at all by any "string noise", as I was able to learn the bass line easier from this video than many others I have seen out there.
plymman April 11th, 2012, 02:19 PM Great bass line and nicely (if a little slowly) taught but that is a truly dreadful bass sound.
soul-o April 11th, 2012, 02:47 PM Great guitar line on that one, too- and it always seems to make audience members go "woo" and run to the dancefloor, so there's that.
TG April 11th, 2012, 02:52 PM Don't worry about it unless you get an urge to perm your hair into an afro and start dancing.

I'm not saying this guy sounds like Jermaine, come on...
A little buzzy, but can we really say that this would not pass on a live gig?
I really need to know now after two people saying this is just a horrendous bass sound. Is it that intolerable? I've been to great gigs where the bass sounded worse.
I was just trying to show someone the exact notes of how this is played, not so much a "hey, check out the tone this guy get's on this bass".. capiche?
Wanna troll and flame? Do it somewhere else, kids.

Relax. The guy has a lot of string buzz. It's a perfectly functional instructional vid, but yeah.

+1
No need for anyone to get their knickers in a twist....
Anchoret April 12th, 2012, 07:31 AM A little buzzy, but can we really say that this would not pass on a live gig?
I could, yeah, but that wasn't my point.
My point was I simply couldn't clearly follow the notes for the rattle, which sort of defeats the whole purpose of an instructional video, doesn't it?
My second thought was, "if this guy is some hotdog instructor, how can he be unaware of this horrific racket or the concept of left-hand muting?"
Very strange.

Nobody's trolling or flaming, just stating their opinions, and last time I looked, nobody put you in charge of ordering people what not to do.
Nobody is going to sound like Jermaine because Wilton Felder played that track.
It's not unusual to hear that much string noise at a gig, or even in the studio before a track is plugged into the mix. But if someone is putting out an instructional video and expects to be respected as an instructor, it's a good idea to clean up the noise.
IMHO, easier to learn by listening to the actual track and figuring out the note placement yourself.

Nice track - thanks.
for me that beats debating string buzz.
