moonman2 April 9th, 2012, 11:35 AM Hey folks, I'd like to buy a good Tele playing instructional DVD and was hoping you guys could recommend me one please.
Which do you guys think is one that I'd really get the most out of ?
(I've been playing guitar for quite some time now and would regard myself as an intermediate to advanced player. However, I'm fairly new to country style playing and have only adopted the style recently).
Thanks in advance
jklotz April 9th, 2012, 02:27 PM Might give the Doug seven stuff a look. I got the playing in circles one. And found it helpful
Sooper8 April 9th, 2012, 02:55 PM I found the Troy Dexter 50 country licks to be very good...
And the Jim Weider x2 Homespun ones are very good
Both suitable for advanced guitarist but new to country players
weelie April 10th, 2012, 04:47 AM Which Weider set? I've only seen the rockabilly one, and I think the rest are more like (country) blues stuff?
Search would bring forth the usual nominations. Like the above ones and then http://terrydownsmusic.com/ and http://www.amazon.com/Arlen-Roths-Masters-Telecaster-Landers/dp/B0002T2QZG etc. (Haven't viewed these myself), or some Steve Trovato tapes.
Omiewise65 April 10th, 2012, 05:57 AM Get this http://www.chip.de/downloads/ClipGrab_40171753.html and some of those 4g-2b3EYHuo&feature=related
and you're done
Samrsmiley April 10th, 2012, 01:10 PM Brent Mason's is good, but he goes REALLY fast.
Danny Gatton's-same thing, great but so fast.
Both are on Netflix-so something to check out before buying. (Where they send you DVDs, not streaming)

All of Doug Seven's stuff that I've checked out I have LOVED. I went from being a strictly rock dude to having plenty of country licks up my sleeve. I've been thinking of picking up Playing in Circles, but do you recommend having Volume 3 and/or 4 before getting that?
stevieboy April 10th, 2012, 02:09 PM Steve Trovato has got a new DVD out, sold through Truefire, maybe other places too, I don't know, but instant download is available too.
http://truefire.com/blues-guitar-lessons/voodoo-blues/
It's called Voodoo Blues, but I wouldn't say it was exactly a blues video, more general roots type stuff that could be used in blues, country, rock, etc. I have Truefire membership so I can access all of their courses, and I've fooled with a little bit. Pretty cool, lots of stuff.
Maybe not just what the OP is looking for, but maybe someone will see this and it will appeal to them.

Both deal with players like Robbie Robertson, James Burton and a great section on Jesse Ed Davis. Maybe we are just not agreeing on 'country' definition:lol:

Brandon mac April 11th, 2012, 10:59 AM the johnny hiland one helped me alot. the doug seven stuff did too!! i would highly suggest both
moonman2 April 14th, 2012, 01:44 PM thanks guys - will check 'em out
historicus146 April 15th, 2012, 08:50 AM Get the Brent Mason "Guitar Star" program...has tabs video, the ability to slow down...etc..Different keys as well.
Doug Seven seems to have created a great series.....
It might depend if you are a flat picker or a thumb picker....which video to get....
Mason = Thumb, Doug Seven = Flat.
moonman2 April 15th, 2012, 12:11 PM I'm actually fairly competent playing with both no pick (ala knopfler style) and hybrid so......
I'm quite interested in the Doug Seven stuff, so what would be a good starting point for a download ?

I started with Volume 1 and 2 but that was with absolutely no experience with hybrid picking or country licks. There are some good licks on those and they're super cheap compared to his more recent vids. The production value is not as nice however.
I also picked up Habitual Techniques which helps get inside the mind of Brad Paisley which was very cool and I most recently got Playing in Circles which is aimed at breaking down how to solo in that style. Not that far into it but really digging it.
Doug has preview vids for each installment on the website so just check them all out and see what speaks to you.
