Saw the show back in 1983 and got it on a revox tape . Now it's been digitally remastered . Great show by a great musician . Always wondered if he's still making music today .

Yes.
I saw him at Werchter festival in 1984. I went there to see some other band, but I still remember his outstanding performance.
hekawi April 9th, 2012, 07:39 AM i enjoy his music.
two great albums:

and a lot of really, really good ones.
Just-Jim April 9th, 2012, 09:56 AM Saw him in the 80's, but after the original line up disbanded. Also saw the 25th anniversary tour of "The Joe Jackson Band", playing just the old stuff. It was one of the more memorable concerts for me to date. The 25th anniversary tour was supposed to be put out on DVD and it only came out on CD. I am still hoping it becomes a DVD.
Wrong-Note Rod April 9th, 2012, 10:05 AM I saw the Big World tour at the Fabulous Fox Theatre, quite good. Played "Is She Really Going Out With Him" in a cover band, lots of unexpected chord changes and quirky timing in that, fun to play.
gemktm April 12th, 2012, 07:01 AM "Look Sharp" and "I'm the Man " were great records. I thought Gary Sanford had a really good sound and played some goood stuff... though I remember Joe saying he got rid of him because "it was always a battle to get him to play the parts I wanted" ( loosely quoted ).
Martinp April 13th, 2012, 12:46 AM the production on those first few records was terrific, they just sounded good.
and Graham Maby's bass playing always made my ears happy
backporchmusic April 13th, 2012, 01:01 AM Am I wrong or is there no guitar on that Rockpalast show at all? But I do love Joe Jackson, still have Look Sharp on double 10" vinyl that gets a regular spin on the old turntable.

No, you're right!
And that's why this isn't my favorite.
I like his work very much, the pinnacle of it to me is the Big World album undoubtly. I think Vinnie Zummo is a fantastic guitarist. He made me want to have a steinberger . Actually made me have two.
backporchmusic April 13th, 2012, 04:07 AM FWIW I love that Rockpalast show DVD, guitar or not. Just a great performer and songwriter. In fact, I watched that thinking 'no guitar???!!!?' but really enjoyed it anyway, just surprised they pulled it off. I mean, who plays a rock style show without a guitar?
JCBurke59 April 13th, 2012, 04:25 AM ...Any love here for his music ?
Oh yeah, big time. Seen him live 30+ times since the early 80's.
Managed to catch quite a few one-off and 'non-tour' shows in NYC up until he moved away a few years ago.
The JJB (Volume 4) reunion tour was huge for me as I didn't catch the earliest tours from the first couple of albums.
Here's a pic of my wife with Graham Maby...

backporchmusic April 13th, 2012, 04:32 AM Nice! Any thoughts on that "Volume 4" album? It got good buzz.
JCBurke59 April 13th, 2012, 04:46 AM I liked 'Volume 4' well enough, but my recommendation would be to pick up 'Afterlife' (if you don't mind a live recording). There's a 2-disc version available which is worthwhile if you can find it. I've seen it locally for reasonable money (<$20), not sure why it's so expensive on Amazon.
It's a chance to preview some of the 'Volume 4' tracks while picking up some really nice live versions of the old stuff.
Edited to add: Just went back onto Amazon and found a Volume 4 special edition with a live bonus disc at a reasonable price (very cheap on the 'marketplace'). So there's another good option.
Rich_S April 15th, 2012, 07:13 PM I've seen JJ three times, once in the mid '80s doing the non-guitars thing (right up close at the Stone Balloon in Newark, DE) and the Big World tour twice, both at the Spectrum in Philly. The first time I saw that tour was with Vinnie Zummo, then they came around again later in the tour with a different guitarist.
I listened to the Big Works CD in the car several time last week. The Rick Ford/Gary Burke rhythm section was an amazing powerhouse, but Graham Maby/Dave Houghton will always be my favorite.
I've played a lot of the early material in covers bands over the years, and it kills me that I never got to see the original band play live.

Tom Teeley replaced Zummo on the Big World Tour. Zummo had some huge debate with the record company, and not Joe, that's why he left. Teeley can be heard and seen on the the Live Tokyo '86 DVD-VHS St2yi0IEIK4,
and is alright, but he got to his best form on the Laughter and Lust tour a few years later

Zummo actually was fantastic during the 7 year residence with Joe, I'm sure he later regretted walking out on him in the middle of the tour....
