flyingbanana April 9th, 2012, 03:11 AM Hi guys. I had a question about the Beach Boys performing Sloop John B live. Have any of you ever seen the original lineup perform this song?
Here's the youtube video of their 1980 concert in England. They started it out normal, but it seemed like Dennis kicked it into a faster tempo and then at 2:11 into it, Dennis was pounding out a double beat. It seemed to take Carl by surprise, and they all just went with it.
In any case, it really sounded great. Just wondering.
What a great band...and before my time. I am revisiting their stuff now. Really digging Carl Wilson. What a class act he was.
Sorry...Here's the video.

TeleTim911 April 9th, 2012, 03:50 AM I'm with Telemarkman, what video? I tried to find it on you tube....couldn't.
flyingbanana April 9th, 2012, 04:48 AM Sorry bout that. It's up in my op.
lewis April 9th, 2012, 07:55 AM That song rubs me the wrong way. Never liked it. That being said, I love seeing/hearing live Beach Boys music from that time period because they were a good live band, even compared to more popular bands from the 70s-80s, when the BBs weren't as popular.
Joe Baggadonitz April 9th, 2012, 09:56 AM Dennis is rushing the tempo - gee, he might be drunk!
Not saying none of them cared but Carl was apparently the one who kept the band tight and demanded a good performance when playing live. Brian was apparently was a real perfectionist in the studio hence the use of the wrecking crew and many other session guys/gals.
I've never been a huge Beach Boys fan but Brian Wilson came up with some amazing compositions over the years.
soul-o April 9th, 2012, 10:23 AM That was a pretty rough time for Dennis, personally- lots of substance abuse going on towards the end there, but that double-time thing does happen on the Pet Sounds version of "Sloop John B", so it couldn't have been too much of a surprise to Carl. The whole band was a mess at that point, really, except for Mike Love (who had mostly his sartorial issues to contend with), but listen to how great they were singing.
FirstBassman April 9th, 2012, 12:41 PM I saw the Boys at the Nassau Coliseum a couple of years before this.
(Unfortunately Brian was not at the show.)
Are you asking me if I remember how they performed Sloop John B that night?
From over thirty years ago!?
Sorry, no.
I do remember that Dennis did not play drums on every song.
But I can't remember if someone else took over, if there was a second kit or he just stepped upstage to song on ballady drumless songs.
flyingbanana April 9th, 2012, 01:27 PM Thanks for commenting you guys. I'm really digging the Beach Boys right now..especially some of their less played stuff. That connection between Manson and Dennis was pretty crazy as well.
Doug 54 April 9th, 2012, 06:11 PM I play a fun version on guitar with multi string bends and Chetisms
historicus146 April 9th, 2012, 09:51 PM Sloop John B....
find the Kingston Trio version about 10 years earlier...
bobsway April 10th, 2012, 07:43 PM Love the Beach Boys!! Squeaky clean image, bizzare backstory, unbelieveable music, mental illness, family complications, lots of highs/lows. That Knebworth video makes me really wish I could have seen them, excellent live group.
