Paul in Colorado April 9th, 2012, 12:55 AM I'd like something with a p/j pickup set up, light weight, a smallish body and good balance (No neck dive). I don't care if it's active or passive, bolt on or set neck.
What's out there?
Immo April 9th, 2012, 05:30 AM Fender Precision Lyte in PJ configuration. Lightweight, balanced and prestigious.
marshman April 9th, 2012, 12:38 PM I have a Cort headless unit, P/J, passive, weighs next to nothing, well balanced.
Happy Hunting
soulman969 April 9th, 2012, 04:12 PM Paul, if you look into the Squier line you'll find the Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass and VM Jaguar Bass Special. Both with a P/J configuration and smaller body size then a P or J Bass. Both less than $200 new. Ibanez has their GSR200 that's a lightweight P/J for around $200 or less.
Going up from there your have the, the Fender Aerodyne at around $800, a Reggie Hamilton JBass at $900, the Duff McKagan PBass at $1000, a Tony Franklin Fretless PBass and MIA Deluxe PBass at $1600.
I'm sure there are some other lines out there that also have P/J Basses that I'm unfamiliar with.
Paul in Colorado April 11th, 2012, 12:56 AM It doesn't have to be a Fender.
Northerntele April 11th, 2012, 12:58 AM Fender Precision Lyte in PJ configuration. Lightweight, balanced and prestigious.
That's exactly what I was going to say. Or one of the later Zone basses

It's just that Fender seems to have a wider selection of what you're asking for that's all. And I'd forgotten about the P Lyte. There's another choice to put in the hopper.

These are said to have neck dive, though.
Martinp April 12th, 2012, 12:00 AM Sam Ash sold a Brownsville model, it was a black P/J they sold new for $99.
they were incredibly light, and played surprisingly well.
there's a lefty on EBay with a missing tuner (go figger) for like $55
good luck

Thanks. I've never liked that style so I never tried one. Didn't know that but I should have predicted that looking at the body shape. Upper horn is too short.
jbdrumbo April 12th, 2012, 03:38 AM I'm sure they (Jag and Mustang bass) sound very good and play easily, though, as long as you don't let go of the neck while playing.
But just like the SG guitar, a small body won't counterbalance the neck, unless it's a headless design.
KCKC April 12th, 2012, 10:47 AM I recently bought a brand new Ibanez GSR200FM on ebay for $149 including shipping. I had played this model in the store - $249 - and Really liked the feel!
Light body, no dive, PJ set pu. Love the sound and feel. The following link is for reference:

Good luck!

sa paine April 17th, 2012, 11:38 PM G&L SB-2 is basically a P/J
Thomme April 23rd, 2012, 06:16 PM Fender's P/J hybrids have never seemed all that heavy, to me, but then again, I spent most of my teens with a P-bass around my neck. I've got one of their Deluxes, no neck dive, lighter than my older MIM, great balance... as for body size, sorry, it's a full P-bass.
