dog fart April 8th, 2012, 04:58 PM Was it INXS that wrote that song? It's Sunday afternoon, Douglas Adams described this time as the long dark tea time of the soul. Madness approaching, I had to do something, so I decided to change the strings on my '85 Tokai GoldStar Sound. She's a fairly new purchase so once the strings are off I decide to look under the pick guard. Grey bottom pickups with bar magnets glued on the bottom, one magnet is loose. I decide to change pickups to some Fender CS '69 I have. I end up breaking a lug off of the 3-way switch. After a thorough search I determine I don't have another switch. The pickup adjust screws on the Tokai are flat bottomed, the adjust screws on the '69s are countersunk and can not be switched out. Foiled again!. It's appraoching evening I have a strat torn up and scattered all over my dining room table, my wife is rolling her eyes and I have to go shopping for parts tommorrow. At least I have a fresh pack of strings .
The point of this long winded post could be leave well enough alone. I think the point is one thing leads to another. Now where's that envelope filter?
soul-o April 8th, 2012, 07:35 PM The Fixx, not INXS.
MrCairo46 April 8th, 2012, 07:49 PM Yup Th Fixx. Reach the Beach the album and another hit was Saved by Zero
dog fart April 8th, 2012, 11:30 PM Sorry guys, my memories of the '80s can be a little blurry at times. In fact, thanks to another post, I just remembered seeing Robert Plant's solo tour in '85. How did I forget that? I think the lesson here is just say NO!
Since I have a little time and the fact that the old pickup covers don't 100% line up with the CS'69s. I decided to soak the CS covers in coffee and nicotine for a day or so. I can't wait to see where that leads. Just running off at the mouth now. More news as it becomes available.
dog fart April 10th, 2012, 11:53 AM I pulled the pickup covers from the coffee and nicotine yesterday. I was suprised how fast they aged. I'm giving the treatment to the knobs and switch tip now.
For some reason everything was closed yesterday. I did find an open guitar store but they caimed they had to order the switch from Fender  My usual store is open today, I'll get the switch there.
I'm working on my mower today and there is a place that sells nuts and bolts across the street. I'll see if I can find some flat bottomed, not countersunk, height adjustment screws there. I've also called WD to inquire about a custom guard. I left a message, twice, no responce so far but my tracing is made.
One thing leads to another

Mid Life Crisis April 10th, 2012, 03:23 PM I hope fixing the mower is more straightforward than the Strat!

I've been chasing down a problem with it cutting off with no rhyme or reason since last summer. Overhaul, rebuilt carb, fuel line, fuel filter no dice. It's down to the fuel cutoff switch which I ordered today. It should be in Friday. I hope it's the right one, there was a second model.
The best news is that I finally got the Strat going. 48 hours to do a 15 minute string change  The CS'69s are a huge improvement over stock. I had them in a '57 AVRI I had to sell last year. I've played a Strat since '78, I really missed not having one around.
Thanks to all for allowing me to vent
Jakedog April 11th, 2012, 12:43 AM Geez with all of that crap going south at your "magic" touch, were you scared to death to take a leak?
Old Cane April 11th, 2012, 11:58 AM David Lindley always said if you like the way a guitar sounds, don't screw with it. Don't even blow the dust out. Apparently a lof folks disagree. I work with people like that. Their motto is: if it ain't broke, give me a few minutes.

I both agree and disagree with this sentiment.
I too, know plenty of people who will take a great sounding guitar, and ruin it by trying to make it better, even though it really doesn't need anything. I have seen great guitars ruined with "improvements" more times than I could count.
I also think though, that a person needs to take care of their gear. It might not need upgrading or improving to accomplish one's goals, it might be fine as is. However, if one does not maintain it properly, it won't stay that way forever. Stuff wears, and stuff breaks. Stuff gets sweat and dirt and rust in or on it. If those things are not addressed at responsible intervals, it will at some point, cease to function properly.
I work on guitars all the time that are in deplorable condition. Not because they have been abused in the purest sense of the word, but just because they have not been maintained properly. My car runs great. I mean perfectly. I'm still gonna change the oil and pop in a new air filter this week.
I do the same things with my guitars. Things don't necessarily need to be changed or modded, but things do need to be lubed, cleaned, and kept up with if I want the thing to work right.
Old Cane April 11th, 2012, 12:21 PM I think some folks take things I say way too seriously. Usually the only time I'm serious is when I get paid and when I say "it's in A".

I'm in the same boat. I think the only reason my wife has stuck around is because she never listens to me anyway.
The pickup change is behind me. The only thing left to do is mangle some notes
