Are the MANY threads on these pedals a marketing thing?

I'd honestly say that its because they make a solid product at a very affordable price. The masses love that combination.

I think we all just get excited when we come across cheap, good sounding pedals (in my case with Biyang pedals, though I will try Joyo up the road when I get some $$), so we just wanna spread the word
