tnt423 April 7th, 2012, 06:30 PM I swear I still build F-style guitars.
My son wants a LP style guitar.
Here is the plan.
Walnut hollow core. Maple arched top maple flat back.
Birdseye neck with walnut center and two thin mahogany strips veneered headstock front and back. Braz rosewood fretboard with maple binding. As alway I like to include a volute, every guitar gets dropped eventually.
Going to try and rout the binding channels to leave about 1/32" of maple and then bind it it walnut.
This will go slow, but if it ends up looking good I think I'll just oil it and shoot gloss clear nitro.
Got the top and back bookmatched. Top is glued on and template routed with the neck and pickup angles routed. Neck is roughed in and glued up. I could use some more clamps there, maybe:wink:
Here is two weeks of work done in the evenings.
tnt423 April 8th, 2012, 08:32 PM Scored some nice brazillian with some bloodwood last week.

Pulled the clamps off the neck and levelled the back and heel.

Squared the face of the headstock and rough cut a couple of fretboards, I'll let them aclimate for a few days and fork test them to choose which is best for this build.

tnt423 May 1st, 2012, 08:34 PM Rough work done on body, bending walnut for binding is not easy.

Sloppy glue work, lots of sanding to do...

mgdesigns May 1st, 2012, 09:37 PM Walnut binding - did you have to water soak it first to get it to bend? That top is looking great. Keep posting.

My son wants a LP style guitar.
And you still claim him? You're a good man
Walnut binding, that's gonna look pretty cool.
tnt423 May 1st, 2012, 11:05 PM Walnut binding - did you have to water soak it first to get it to bend? That top is looking great. Keep posting.
Thanks, yeah i found if you don't keep it good and wet it will scorch horribly. Its always a challenge.
tnt423 May 1st, 2012, 11:07 PM Here's the back with the channel cut

tnt423 May 7th, 2012, 08:36 AM Well it took most of a day after yard work to get here. Got the rest of the binding on sanded and hit it with some naptha to see where we are.

Long way to go on the profiles.
Crafty Fox May 7th, 2012, 09:02 AM Very nice indeed! Those timbers look awesome, excellent work too.
tnt423 May 7th, 2012, 11:11 AM Thanks, its amazing the difference in how much brighter the sugar maple is over the red maple I made the top out of. I have to keep that in mind for future builds. I took the sugar maple and walnut down myself and aged for over ten years and a guy recently gave me the red maple as a thanks for helping him with his builds, total cost so far zero dollars.
tnt423 May 13th, 2012, 03:14 PM Got some more work done on the neck and fretboard....

Necks not glued in yet. I need check for balance after i route the pickup holes to see if I need to chamber the head before I overlay the front and back, dang I'm slow.
Sorry for the blurry pics can't seem to get better focus today.
tnt423 March 27th, 2013, 05:55 PM Well, life kinda kicked me square in the cojones last summer. Financial difficulties from "corporate restructuring" forced an unplanned moved after over twenty years. Oh well did'nt lose anything really important.
So now I'm starting to unpack a few things and move on with life. Back to working on guitars on the kitchen counter. Worked 30 years ago, why not now?
Here is where we are. French polished real quick and...

Backplates are held in place with magnets and be bound with the same walnut as the rest of the body.
He chose black hardware and I have some in a box if I can lay hands on it.
Lots of details and if spring ever gets here I'll work outside to keep the mess down. Been running a shop vac with the vac outside with a hose throught the window to keep the dust down and my (much) better half OK with using her workshop. Not being able to route right now I used the drill and chisel method for the pickup holes. They should look better but the rings will hide it well enough. I hope.
It's good to build again and luckily my son isn't demanding on time. He stole my DC with P90s so he can be patient.
tnt423 March 30th, 2013, 01:03 AM Got alittle done after work this evening...

guitarbuilder March 30th, 2013, 06:49 AM Nice Lester....I'd go for this kind of knob with all those choice woods you are using. The rosewood bell ones:

Fatcat211 March 30th, 2013, 07:29 AM Beaut of a build you have going. I vote for amber witchhats.
Jupiter March 30th, 2013, 07:33 AM That's gorgeous wood. Nice build; I'm glad you got to get onto it again.
tnt423 March 30th, 2013, 08:11 AM Thanks, all. Appreciate the link. Leaning toward the amber witchhats, it those rosewood knobs are intriguing...

CraigB April 6th, 2013, 10:19 PM That is what a non-tele oughta be  And a wonderfully different take on all the fantastic LP builds going on around here currently - Beautiful grain, fantastic shaping - that is one nice guitar you got going there!
tnt423 April 7th, 2013, 12:01 AM Thanks, you're very kind. Hope my son likes it as much.
tnt423 April 11th, 2013, 09:49 PM Got a few moments here, think its time to fit the p'up rings.
