Anybody play this or familiar with how Johnny plays it? I'm trying to work it out. I'm pretty sure the main chord is a C7#9 in first position. Then F7 to Eb7 ascending back to F7. But in this key no dominant 7 chord I can come up with sounds like his. If I play it in E ( moving the 7#9 to the 6th fret) a first form dominant 7 (root on the 1st string) works nicely. But Johnny's not playing in E and you can't get a usable one in C. Might the song not be in standard tuning? Would appreciate your tips. Thanks in advance.

Johnny does play a lot of open tunnings as well as standard. Can't help you out on this song.

Try a dom9 in the walk. F9 to Eb9 and up..then try a 13 on the second group and finish with a G7#9.

I've heard the tune , had the CD , don't recall it. Probably the one that reminded me of Hendrix . Besides open tunings , He also tuned down a whole step a lot .
I doubt I helped much .I'd say keep listening and plugging at it . Johnny was ,is , the master of the Blues Scale. Hard stuff to play N-F-N . I personally could never do it. I could do the jist of several tunes , and capture the "spirit" of the tune is about all .

i went over to u-tube and listened to the "live in nyc" version and i really think he's playing one step down, if that helps any to know.

i was going to show you this version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-L5UIS3sbVY but it's a completely different song. that goldtop sounds great, though.

There's video of Snooks Eaglin doing his version.

You have to go all the way to about the 2:50 point to see him play the bridge. What would you say? He's not playing dom 7s. His index finger is barring the 7th fret. His middle finger is barring the first 3 strings on the 8th fret. The pinky is on the 1st string 10th fret, then off (Cm6th#9?), then he walks this from the 5th fret back to the 7th fret. Back at around 1:05 you can see that he resolves to a G7 at the third fret.

Going back to the Winter version, he's definitely in C. Because of his distortion I'm not sure if he's playing Snook's chords for the walk but it's close. And I think Johnny may be resolving with the G7 at the 8th fret.

Johnny's goldtop does sound good, T-bird! I saw him with it at a show in 1969. (oops, revealed age! ) He had a pair of stacked Twins on stage with him. No Edgar, though. Just the trio. They were fabulous!

Just figured out these bridge walk chords are the dominant 9s in wsigler's post. You nailed it. Thanks much!

Never saw the Snooks version. His sounds really clean. He's always walking the 9 though which is much easier than the 13. You can hear Johnny get a little "loose" with the 13 grip.

Glad to help.
