robotguitar April 1st, 2012, 10:01 PM Been playing country in a band for a bit and am still learning and trying to improve my tone. I have a minimal set up which includes a USA standard tele, boss dd7 delay, volume pedal, and a Mesa boogie f50 with clean and overdrive and usually just a touch of reverb. I'm fairly happy with the tones but was thinking of adding a compression pedal to level out my sound. Was hoping for some advice from seasoned country players about which compression pedals are suitable. I would also like to hear about what kind of set up you guys use. Thanks for reading.
Rod Parsons April 1st, 2012, 10:10 PM Boss CS 3 .. Works for me.
telewacked April 1st, 2012, 10:16 PM I like the classic pedals too...long time Dyna Comp user here.
Lee Harvey April 1st, 2012, 10:28 PM The Visual Sound sounds pretty good.
jasonplays April 2nd, 2012, 08:36 PM I use a rothwell love squeeze. Great pedal that doesn't colour your sound and it's not as expensive as the popular keeley comp. the wampler ego compressor is also good.
MASONish April 2nd, 2012, 08:52 PM I've got 3. The Wampler Ego Compressor is definitely my favorite. I mainly play honky tonk chicken pickin' these days.
McGlamRock April 2nd, 2012, 09:19 PM The CS-3 works great with my Mesa F-30
SPUDCASTER April 2nd, 2012, 10:07 PM Usually in the "Stomp Box" forum there's two or three threads going on about compressors.
Also try www.ovnilab.com ,this guy does reviews on a bunch of compressors among other things.
chabby April 3rd, 2012, 04:44 PM CS-3 is all I've ever owned. I use that a tube scream and MXR Dist+
and a wah, that's my pedal board I'd love to build or come by a 63 Fender Reverb stand alone unit some day, then I'd be done.
akukulich April 3rd, 2012, 04:59 PM I've been digging my Barber Tone Press.
TJScarlett April 3rd, 2012, 05:27 PM Boss CS 3 .. Works for me.
Love my CS-3 too!
Modern Saint April 6th, 2012, 10:50 AM I'm just entering the chickin' pickin realm and have the dyna comp, building a BYOC comp (old Ross Comp) and just bought the Wampler Ego Comp. I can't compare the BYOC clone but I do favor the Wampler 100% over my Dyna Comp. The Blend knob is what won me over - freakin' ossum!
limbe April 6th, 2012, 11:08 AM I´ve used a CS-3 for a long time. Also got a T-REX Comp-Nova that doesn´t colour the tone as much as the CS-3.I still think that the CS-3 is a good pedal to start with though. Many Country players favour the CS-3 or modded versions of it.
Hiker April 6th, 2012, 11:38 AM There's plenty of 'Main Squeeze' pedals on the 'used' market that work fine (I use one) for the subtle blend that you seem to be after...

blowtorch April 6th, 2012, 11:51 AM another CS3 guy here. It's pretty much THE country compressor, I think.
Having said that, I don't really use it too much. I don't really care for compression, generally. But it has THAT sound.
hal April 6th, 2012, 12:13 PM I am big on compressors. I use the Maxon CP-101. I went through a big search a few years ago. I probably bought or tried out everything out there. I settled on this because it was the quietest.
I still have my Made in Japan Boss CS-2. It is a great one as well.
psychotelepathic April 28th, 2012, 01:24 PM In my opinion, Keeley 2 knob is the cadillac and will never leave my board. Winner for best value would be a modded CS-3. I have a CS-3 with the monte albums mod and it sounds great. You can pick up used CS-3s for next to nothing, and the mod is super easy...And they're not bad stock either.
