Greetings from wonderful, wet, Washington State. I'm almost 46, and put down the guitar for so long I forgot how to play. I have an 80-something Series 10 strat-style with single coils in the neck and mid, and humbucker in bridge, well-worn, a 1998 Gibson Les Paul Standard black beauty, a $100 dollar Dean Vendetta (actually plays well, LOL), and my new toy and favorite, a Squier CLassic Vibe Tele, blonde with a Lil' 59 added (I got it that way). WHen I started getting back into fondling my guitars this year (my new yrs resolution was to play again), I heard country and blues, and decided I had to have a tele.
I narrowed it down to a Mexi FSR in butterscotch, and was waiting to afford to get it, then last week a used Classic Vibe came into the local GC. I have been virtually living at GC prior to this trying to find "my" Tele. I have VERY limited ability, it's almost like learning to walk all over again. I played Mexis and US models, and originally shied away from Squiers, as I heard they were cheap. Then this one came in. I played it, and compared it to the $500 FSR. The FSR sounded better than the standard, and cleaner than the CLassic Vibe, but not $250 cleaner. I got mine for 2 1/2 bills, plus it already had a lil 59 installed. When I first picked it up, I noticed someone had drop D tuned it, so the guy turned up the amp and just shredded with it. I'm telling myself Tele's aren't supposed to do that, but do it it did! Then he tuned it to regular tuning, and it played clear as a bell. It doesn't have the twang with the lil 59, but still fairly clear in lead position. AS I am new to teles, and playing again, I would appreciate some advice on whether to split the coils on the lil 59, or as the tech told me, he could put a push/pull pot in and wire it in series. He told me it would reduce the power to 1/4 of the full lil 59 in one position and bring it back to normal in the other. WHat is the best route for getting the twang back if I want it?. ALso, with the lil 59, do I need a 500k pot if I replace it (if it hasn't been already), and do I need a different cap?
I believe the stock one is a .047uf, do all humbuckers need a .022?, and does changing this screw up the tone on the neck pickup (stock Alnico 3)?
SOrry for so many questions, and if Im posting these questions on the wrong part of the forum. I got my Tele for the right price, and from what I gather the original teless were pine bodie and maple necks just like this one. I know some people scoff at Squiers, but I got lucky on mine. Neck, and fit and finish are perfect. 2 pencil lead sized nicks in finish, and dime size indentation on back of body are only flaws. tuners are great, and I've bent the strings a few times learning "Layla", and she is still in tune.
Thanks for a great forum, I also spent until 2:30 AM the night before I bought it reading stuff on this forum.
