Hi all,
I've been listening to Hot Legs by Rod Stewart all day and trying to figure out what pentatonic to use to improvise over it. The song is in the key of G and it's basic I, IV, V progression.
Is it G minor pentatonic or G major?
Here's the song:

Most of the guitar work is major pentatonic until it gets to the solo, then it uses both major and minor pent. The improv over the IV (C) is minor pent, then the next section of I (G) is minor pent as well. The main theme of the guitar riff is major pent. You can tell major pent from minor pent because it uses the 6 and 2 notes of the scale, and starts bends from those notes whereas the minor pent uses the flat 3 and the flat 7 and bends the 4 a lot more.

All those country type opening riffs in the song are Gmaj pent. So maj is a safe bet but I'd probably be inclined to throw in a tiny bit of min pent as well to add a bit of flavour.
Oops. Typing at the same time as Jb.^^^

I think what confused me was the mixing of major and minor, since it sounded good to me when I played both scales depending on the chord I was over.
Thank you both for you help.

You may already know this but that's a very common thing to do, mixing min and maj pent. Especially in a rock song that's borrowing from country music. If it was straight up country there's a better chance it would stay maj pent the whole way through but even in country, especially more modern rocked up country, you'll hear the two scales mixed (and a whole lot more). Lots of blues players mix them up freely as well when it's appropriate.
