I picked up a 69' Traynor YBA-1 this past weekend, and many say they are Very close to the 59' bassmans and also the plexis..I'd like to mod it in the direction of the bassman over the next while, and want to change the 4M pots to 1M to start with, but wondered if anyone might know of where I can find a layout..lots of schematics of them on the net but can't sem to find anything else..Thank you...

Cool find!
"A Desktop Reference of Hip Vintage Guitar Amps" has it I'm pretty sure.

The omly layouts I've seen have been for Fender amps. Anything other than that and you need to use a schmatic.
Is that the amp with 4 inputs layed out like a Marshall ? Two EL34s?

Fender 5f6a.
That was one of my first assignments! You can just follow along and make the (as you'll see) very few changes to the Traynor. They are astoundingly similar! We did make some other minor tweaks that I don't recall.
Someone please correct if wrong :)
I also shortened many of the leads, as they were way too generously long. It's a great chassis! Lots of elbow room.

I think our tweaks were to make it jtm45 like. It sounded sooo good! Warm and crunchy.

thanks guys...i'll check out the site andy, thanks...from what I've been reading they can either be very easily be geared towards a marshall jtm45 plexi or as andy mentioned also the 5f6a bassman which I feel will suit my style better..Peter Traynor did a great job on these amps, they are 45 watts and the earlier ones (i think) had the solid state recitfiers along with a choke, (as mine has) but they are very loud and some say too bright..I'm confident I can milk some really sweet tones from it without a whole lots of changes..

bobby, yes it does have 4 inputs and runs a pair of el34...weber has many different layouts and schematics...although there are lots of mod suggestions out there along with schematics, I had hoped for a layout also as they're just handy to have to look at..

Take the top off the amp there should be a schematic pasted to the lid.

a layout is different than a schematic

Did you get a good deal on it? I'm curious and haven't even taken the simple step of checking the 'bay.
What I mentioned was the Gerald Weber book.
It's really awesome! Has loads of schematics and for the Fenders any included layouts. (Not to mention Trainwreck pages, and loads of useful mods and tips) It's good practice as the scheme is on top and layout below. It's really helpful for learning to navigate schematics (something I'm still challenged by).

I picked mine up for $400 and we see them ranging up here anywhere from high 300 to $650, an average price is $500-$550...they are a real "hidden treasure"..... The hammon trannies on those old units are massive with plenty of room inside chassis to work......although i'm Still dead ended in finding a layout but i'll keep looking

I'll check into the Weber book Andy, thanks..

Cool! Waaaay cheaper than a 60's jtm45 for sure. And it would be totally disrespectful/ undeserving to say, "a poor mans..."

Before you go making all sorts of "Mods" to that Amp. Change what needs to be changed in it and live with it for awhile. Peter Traynor made great Amps. They stand very well on their own. Very well made and with the right speakers great sounding too.

I almost bought one of these in Dawson Creek BC. Had I been on my way to the lower 48 instead of Alaska I would have. Cool guitar store if you ever get there.

Here's a really good source

They are great amps!! I've got a '73 YBA-1

yes I found the kilback site also and I think their suggestions are legit, but for now, changing the volume pots will be a good start, then play it for awhile as is..although I bought this head for experimenting ..

I totally agree with this. I have on that's modded, presumably to plexi specs, and the other that is unmodded, other than 6550's installed. I like the stock one better, for the most part. Great sounding amp as is.

I certainly have no intention of bastardizing the ol' girl as I appreciate you guys suggesting to leave it stock...I think if I just change the volume pots to 1M audio taper that will be fine, but then maybe new trannys, choke, rip out and crush All the mustard caps, new electrolytics, change all resistors and diodes, new input and speaker jacks and replace warped eyelet board, new wire and clean and polish chassis...always best to leave things alone..

Hehe, cheers man. I also changed the volume pots too. It made it more immediate, volumewise.
Where abouts are you on Ontario?

Mine is a '73 and came with 500k vol pots stock, I changed the 100k mixer resistors to match a Bassman (270k I think) and did the tone stack mods. Big improvements

I'm in London Bohdan...nice looking avatar :)

thanks rbell, I'm not sure when they changed to the 500's but sure the earlier models had the 4Meg's..glad you liked the changes you made and as soon as we get this tweed deluxe working right, we'll start looking alot closer at the Traynor..

Congrats on the new amp Ernie.

It's a great thing to live in the land of Traynor.

You might glean some info from this thread we have going...

I think '72 or '73 was the change to 500k, you'll discover that the channels are very interactive with the 100k mixer resistors (plug in to chn 1 and adjust vol on chn 2 and it will effect chn 1) that's the reason I changed that, also the tone stack really is aimed at bass instead of guitar, replacing the .1uf with a .02uf in the tone stack makes it the same as a Bassman or JTM45. If you want to go further into Bassman tone, replace the 1st 12ax7 with a 12at7

Nice Ernie, I'm in Windsor. Thanks, the avatar is a custom made cab I made with matching ac30 clone head. My YBA sounds killer through the cab too!!

I finally got the 1M pots installed and have 2 of the 50X50X500 Volt E-caps coming....HOW do I get those old Mallorys out that hang down the bottom of the chassis..I read that they were twist off, but I've got the one spinnig but no way does it want to come out...There are 4 soldered tabs inside the chassis that i'm thinking need to be unsoldered to release the caps, but my 80watt weller iron will not melt the solder so I have a 120 watt on order now from the tube depot....

other than that I have 4 new inputs jacks I'm going to replace the orignals with, for the cost of them it's cheap insurance as far as I'm concerned

thanks RumRunner....Pat Furian is a very knowledgable man with Traynors, and he mentions how he needs 2-80watt irons to undo the ground tabs from chassis...I had 1 80watter propped against the chassis and then had to hold a 15 and another 40 like a pair of chopsticks to allow myself to hold the solder wick in the opposite hand yet and hold your tongue just the right way to git er dun, but it was alot trickier than I thought it would be..

I don't think this one is a pop top.

You're correct wileyone and someone was kind enough to remove the schematic from under the lid anyways. :(
