Live looping with a MIDI controller and Animoog

This is my first post!

I recently downloaded the Animoog app for iPad, and got to thinking that a lot of these sounds could be interesting to use in a live situation. I am a guitar player (Am Std Tele ftw) and am not too familiar with using midi controllers or anything of the sort so I've come here for some advice.

What I'm thinking about doing is getting an inexpensive MIDI controller and using the camera usb port adapter by apple hooked up to my ipad (which you can use to interface the MIDI controller with the iPad) and then using a 3.5 to 1/4 inch adapter into the headphones plug on the iPad plugged into a bass amp. (I know I could hook it through a PA, but I won't always be using one) I've been looking at an M-Audio Keystation 49.

Since I will be playing guitar as well, I was wondering how I could go about looping my MIDI parts I play using Animoog tones (and then playing guitar over it). The M-Audio description on the website I'm looking at says it has looping capabilities with the included software. Is there a way I could connect my macbook to the setup and loop with software using the Animoog for tones or would I have to get a loop pedal? Are there MIDI controllers (relatively inexpensive) that have loop functions built in?

I have no idea if I am making this way more complicated that it is or if it is possible. Like I said, I am only familiar with guitar and bass rigs.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
