Mod Peavey 410e for bass: replace speakers---WORTH IT?

So I have a good deal on a 410e that I can get. Tried it hooked up to my Eden WT550, and it's lacking bass punch.

So I have two options. Put new 10s (X4) in this cabinet, which is plywood, not solid hardwood nor particle board. Or I could find another decent cabinet for the Eden.

I play in a home studio so that's the usage.

Is it worth it? If so, what speakers do you suggest? Don't wanna sink TONS of money into it, but this would replace my weak-ish Fender Rumble100 (1X15 I think).

Thoughts?

The 410e looks LIKE this one (this isn't it). Love the tweed look. Worth it to mod it, or look elsewhere?

I always liked the pro Peavey drivers, but I think this used 'generic' drivers and not the Sheffields, Black Widow, Scorpion, etc. models.

Also - it is wired at 16 ohms, so your amp will put out less than the 300 watts specified by the WT550 at 8 ohms. At a minimum you should rewire in series or series parellel to get a lower impedence and more power (I always thought the WT were way underpowered unless you drove them down to 2 ohms).

At the end of the day it is a guitar cab and not a bass cab, so it is not ported and will make your lows disappear.

Why not reload your Fender cab?

That's an interesting point, and likely one that'll direct me to look elsewhere.

The Rumble won't hold more than one speaker, and I'm thinking I'd want 2X12 or 4X10, but then again, I'm an idiot when it comes to bass amps so I dunno.

And yes, certainly planned to rewire for lower ohms to get more out of the amp. But it's looking like I'll find another cab.

I love to tinker, but am afraid that trying to make a guitar cab into a bass cab would be throwing money down a hole that you'll be hardpressed to get back.

For what it's worth, I have a second-hand carvin 410 bass cab with 'level knob' for the tweeter and it is just awesome for everything I do...was pretty inexpensive, as well.

If it's an open back cab, I'd suggest selling it to a guitar player and buying a good used bass cab. Those are great guitar cabs.
