Hey there,

I just upgraded the bejesus out of a MIM Strat and I'm looking at locking tuners now. I've never used them before. What are your favorites and why?
The Sperzal locking tuners seem pretty cool. That's what I'm looking at right now. Heard good things about Planet Waves too but that brand seems cheap to me...

Advice?

the '05 Arctic White MIM Strat has been upgraded as follows...
2006 American Fender Hwy 1 Neck (rosewood)
Fender CS69 neck/middle pickups
Duncan SSL1 bridge pickup
Callaham bridge/trem (complete assembly)
Schaller Straplocks
Switchcraft jack
Middle tone control changed to bridge tone control, no load tone pot going in there next

A plus would be if the tuners fit the holes of my '06 Highway 1 neck without drilling but I'm willing to drill if it's worth while.

Sperzels are the best, imo. Run the string thru, tighten tuner down and twist a turn or two and snip. Smooth as silk. Pretty easy.

Having said that, I only have vintage (non-locking) tuners on almost all my guitars now...

I've been playing on/off for 15 years. Never wanted anything to do with locking tuners. I dig vintage ones too. But now that I have a Strat... it seems locking tuners are a must. I got a setup from my local shop but even after the strings were stretched out properly, I still get tuning stability issues when using the trem. I usually don't dive bomb wiht it. Just subtle warble for desert rock and such.

I'm basically looking at Sperzels or the Fender/Schallers that look quite similar. But I'm open to suggestions.

I have Sperzels on a guitar I just bought. They seem to be well made and work well.

I'm going with the Fender-Schaller ones for my American Standard.
They drop right in without any drilling.
Just have to get around to buying them...lol.

I bought the Fender/Schallers. It'll probably be my best bet as far as resale value, plus they seem to get high marks. I have 11's on my Strat though so I'm a bit worried about the low E fitting in the hole. We shall see...

I have many Highway One's and I've replaced ALL the tuners with Fender/Schaller locking tuners.
They're a direct drop in replacement.....NO drilling at all!

My favourite locking tuners for ANY guitar are Grovers.

Sperzels are pretty cool due to so many color choices and knob shape choices!
