sixstringhook March 20th, 2012, 11:21 PM Hey all.
So my wife and I wanted to do something different for our wedding guest sign in book. I have built several guitar bodies that didnt quite make the for somthing i would want to play. Several have had minor imperfections that only i would ever notice. We decided to use one that i had built as our guest sign in. It was a big hit and everyone was thrilled to be "autographing" a guitar. The other nice thing about it is once we get our house, it will be hanging on our wall as decoration.
sixstringhook March 20th, 2012, 11:31 PM I'll go ahead and explain some of what is going on here. The body I used was a poplar body i built that had a knot right in the middle above the bridge. the original intention was to do this as a natural wood stain w/ 3 humbuckers. The middle humbucker route would have taken the knot out. The pickguard was a P90 tele pick guard from an SX tele that i just cut and modified to cover the knot as i was having some issues with getting it filled. I am sure there were alternate options for this, but i wanted to make sure that the pick guard was big enough for the entire wedding party to sign on it.
SketchMan3 March 20th, 2012, 11:41 PM Awe... that's so swe-*ahem* neat. That's an awesome idea, and beautiful looking guitar.
Who knows, maybe one of your guests will become famous, lol.
sixstringhook March 21st, 2012, 12:26 AM well, the way i figured it, a guest sign in book was in the area of $50 total price that i actually paid out (the neck and hardware came from old junker guitars that had been given to me) was the cost of wood and paint which was about $35. I figure that $50 for something that is going to get put into a drawer somewhere and never be looked is kinda pointless. At least with this we/everyone gets to enjoy it.

jazztele March 21st, 2012, 02:44 PM What a cool idea. I'm actually a little bummed I didn't think of it 4 years ago when I got married.
sixstringhook March 21st, 2012, 06:00 PM thanks guys. now i just gotta figure out what to put over it for clear coat that wont cause the marker to run/smudge. I painted it but didnt put any clear on it so its just on the paint. Any suggestions on what i could put over it? i am likely going to be trying out a few different methods on scrap wood but want to know if there are any suggestions.
Joedrc March 21st, 2012, 06:16 PM Very cool idea man, I'm making a mental note of this ;)
Vizcaster March 22nd, 2012, 01:52 PM You do realize that's the last guitar you're going to be allowed to build for awhile, right?
Seriously, nice idea.
Barbeque John March 22nd, 2012, 03:32 PM Clear acrylic spray, start with very light coats, heavy coat will make Sharpie ink run. Don't ask how I know this...

now that you mention it, in a few weeks lol. Its actually a trade off, she is ok w/ me building guitars as long as i build stuff for her as well. Although, she has quite a few cutting boards at this point...

all of em but 2 that were strat attempts
Davecam48 March 24th, 2012, 07:18 AM I'd try a test with a few coats of blonde dewaxed shellac first maybe then apply acrylic over that but shellac seems to go over and under just about everything!
I'd be worried if the ink pens would run with the other stuff first.
Great idea that!
