Okay so I still haven't figured out which position with the pickup selector is which pick up lol there are five positions and I know the one pointed farthest away from you gives you more treble and as you get closer it becomes more bassy.. lol soo can you explain which position is which pickup?

all the way down is the pickup nearest to the bridge. It uses the farthest tone control
Next upwards is the brdge pickup and middle pickup.
The middle position is the middle pickup
next up is middle and pickup by the neck
The last one is the neck pickup. It uses the tone control closest.

the first strat pickup selector switch only had 3 positions, one position for each of the three pickups, starting from the "UP" position, they were
1:neck pickup
2:middle pickup
3:bridge pickup
guitar players would get cool sounds by balancing the switch between positions and getting two pickups working at the same time (like using the middle position on a TELE)
eventually the 5 position was introduced, starting from the "UP" position they are
1: neck pickup
2:neck and middle pickups
3:middle pickup
4:middle and bridge pickups
5:bridge pickup

oh okay thanks!
So now with the tone knobs..the one farthest from me works only with the bridge PU and the one closest to me works only with the neck PU? Or do they affect the other 3 middle positions

Unless your Strat has been rewired, the stock tone controls are:

Top controls neck pickup.
Bottom controls middle pickup.

Bridge pickup has no tone control in stock form - it's like its tone is on 10 all the time.

What's considered top? Closest or farthest from you

top is closest to you. Sorry about my mistake I said the bridge has a tone control. I rewire my strats like oops:oops:

Position are like this:
1. Bridge it is pointing down all the way toward the bridge away from you when you are playing
2. Bridge and middle
3. Middle
4. Middle and neck
5. Neck points all the way up toward the headstock
Those are the positions on a Strat.
Many folks count them backwards with 1 as the neck. I think it might depend and when you learned the switching directions. If you asked me to wire a guard up those are the numbers that I would use for each position.

If you really want to make sure yours is wired like that... or just to test it:
(with your guitar plugged into an amp on a lower volume) Find a small metal screwdriver. Set the switch to the farthest position away from you and tap the screwdriver tip LIGHTLY on a few different pickup poles.

You'll figure it out pretty quickly... work your way through the switch settings tapping on different pickups poles.

Once you figure it out, it will only seem logical. Farthest from the neck, will be farthest from the neck, and so on.

Tone controls are also somewhat logical... closest to the neck, is the neck pickup tone. The only illogical point though will be why there;s no tone on the bridge pickup. I have nothing there. Adding tone control to the bridge pickup is one of the most common modifications done to Strats.
