Whodatpat's 2012 Build Challenge Thread -- COMPLETED

I will probably wind up doing a "fastest build" thread, but I will kick myself if I don't try. This challenge was an amazing experience last year. This year I am going to try to go by the original challenge rules, $100 or less. I will only have a month to work on it. I am in London for work so I won't have access to my shop until March 25th, and then I am on the road through the end of the month. My daughter has been asking for a guitar so this is as good of a time as any. I will have her help with sanding at least.. My only thought is a thinline without the F hole to cut weight. I may go with a shorter scale to cut weight. But that could over complicate the build. Peyton will decide on the color.
Cheers

Just a note to the moderator that I ain't thrown the towel in. I am just still in London. My daughter is looking forward to getting started with me Saturday. I will post pictures as soon as I have wood in hand.

After a day of jetlag I finally had a little progress today. The mystery wood timbers are from the attic in an old garage in Pennsylvania. They had nails through them that I will have to work around. Otherwise it is nice straight and thick rough cut lumber. Really white and soft, I am thinking it is a pine. It has virtually no odor left to it.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG0969.jpg

I plained it to get it fairly flat, and then my daughter Peyton and I used the table saw to square up the sides and the joiner to smooth the edges for gluing. (Dont worry, her hands are and will be kept clear of spinning sharp things.)

We indexed the pieces so that the old nail holes will miss the body when we cut it out.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG0981.jpg

It is really nice having someone around that is excited to vacuum up the dust!
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG0974.jpg

All glued up. It will have to sit like this till I get home Friday and we can get started on cutting and making this look like the Purplecaster she is hoping for.

I have been swamped bussy since I got back from Vegas. We managed to make some more progress.
Since the glue-joints were rock hard I let Peyton scrape them flat before we hit the planer.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG0992.jpg

Then I marked out the body to "miss" the nail holes and trimes the board to exactly 13 inches wide. (12.75 would have beeb better!)

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG0994.jpg

After we got the thickness down to size we marked the body for real and drilled relief holes for the band saw.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG0995.jpg

The Ryobi 9" band saw was not up to the task and gave up half way through. So I finished the "cutout" with the drill press! (Thank you Scatterlee for yet another handy piece of wood shop ingenuity.)

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG0997.jpg

I turned an old TV stand into a router table. Of course I braced it with what I use to brace everything in my shop. Failed and practice necks.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG0998.jpg http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG0999.jpg

We ran out to Woodcraft to pick up the Purpleheart and Maple for the neck. Note to self (Measure twice before you BUY also!) This beautiful piece of birds-eye maple is too short for the normal Tele headstock. So I will have to use my modified (yet unoriginal) headstock design. I am still not sure if I want to cut this piece of maple down and put the fred board on it or save it for a 1 pice. It is really beautiful. Maybe i will check the Maple bin for 3/4 at Home Depot!

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1002.jpg

I ripped the Purpleheart and left a large enough piece for the skunk stripe and dowel. This stuff is not a "purple" in the middle. I planed the two pieces down so now I have an extra if i ever want another purple fret board.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1004.jpg

Well I still have MUCH to do (even with a helper) and little time to do it so, Bye for now.

is the maple too small even with a short scale? or did that part of the plan change?

is purpleheart one of those woods that only changes colors when oxidized? or exposed to UV?

Decided against short scale. Full size everything. She can handle my guitars fine. I believe this wil be a guitar she sits with and one she can play forever. A short scale would find its way to a closet.

That purple is already coming back vividly. I read that on the google box thing that when the wood gets hot from the saw it can turn brown and when it cools it gets the color back. Your oxidation argument is likely closer to accurate. The sawdust was purple right away and that is probably because of the surface area to mass ratio. In any case I like it. I am thinking about Tru-Oil finish, but I have read lacquer does well. We will see. Never oiled a neck and i like learning new stuff.

I went through the bin of 3/4 maple at Home Depot and found a nice piece of birds-eye. I will save the other one for a one piece neck.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1008.jpg

The band saw made it through this stuff OK, but that thing has to go!

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1006.jpg

After making two new neck shaped braces  and ruining my template on the "router table." I decided to go back to the hand held router for the neck. 3rd time was a charm.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1009.jpg

Peyton drilled the cavities and even chiseled them as clean as she could. This is by far her favorite part since she can use these tools. As opposed to watching dad use the dangerous router and yell expletives when he does something stupid.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1011.jpg

I glued the fretboard to the neck and clamped it. Then I routed the cavities smooth. (ish) Here it will sit till we get back home Monday. I had hoped I could at least bring the neck to whittle over the weekend, but I guess not.

After a long weekend in New Jersey with in-law family, I finally got some much needed rest and relaxation in the workshop this afternoon.

Before I trimmed the fret board to size, I used it as a straight edge on the table saw to nibble away headstock to the right thickness.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1042.jpg
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1045.jpg

I trimmed the fret board close with the band saw.
This thing is lethargic! I NEED a new one.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1046.jpg

I dont trust myself with the router today, so I pulled out the scraper cards for this part.
It only took a little longer, but I was never in risk of destroying the neck or cutting off a finger.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1048.jpg

Next I routed for the truss rod. I cant believe how fast this all goes once you have all the jigs built!
I use the micrometer to make sure I rout deep enough, but not too deep.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1049.jpg

I need a jig for lining up these holes. Until then I measure it out each time. I mark the bottom of the rout so I can gauge where the drill needs to enter the rout.
Whenever I can I give Peyton the honors of doing the work.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1050.jpghttp://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1053.jpg

The LMI fretting jig with my modification to make it work on 1 pice necks is so easy a 10 year old can do it. And she did.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1055.jpg

I made the truss rod. It seems like the heavy math goes into the butt end to make sure just enough thread hangs out the hole in the heel.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1056.jpghttp://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1061.jpghttp://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1062.jpg

Truss rod installed, I scraped the skunk stripe to size using some scrap Purpleheart.
Tomorrow I can start turning that square stock into a Purpleheart Dowel using the drill press as a lathe.

April 11th, 2012, 10:46 PM
Tonight I made the Dowel for the truss rod plug. I roughed an end enough to fit n the drill press.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1066.jpg

Next I used a finish nail to steady the wood as I work it. I also set the drill up for the highest RPM.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1067.jpg

I used my Dragon rasp to get the work started. I screwed the board in place to use as a straight edge with the cutting tools.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1068.jpg

The rough side and then slightly less rough side of the ferriers rasp removed the bulk of the wood.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1069.jpghttp://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1070.jpg

At about 4/10 inch thick, I started paying closer attention to the size with the micrometer. I started using 80 grit till I got it to a shade over side and then sanded it smooth.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1071.jpg

It really looks great. Now I can slap glue on it shove I in a hole and gut it off so no one will ever see it again.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1073.jpghttp://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1074.jpg

Spent the day shaping the neck. I have braced a saw horse to use for manhandling necks with a ferrier's rasp (thanks Colt for that knowledge). After I remove the bulk of the wood I clean up the gouges with a hand cut rasp.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1086.jpg

I wish I had time laps to show but this is after about 5 minutes on the ROSS. I LOVE this tool. It easily shaved an hour or two off my work.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1087.jpg

I cleaned it up with 120 and 220 grit. I still have some work to do, but this is pretty good for now. I have never made a neck this thin. I like baseball bats, but this is for my daughters hands.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1088.jpg

Since I am going to set it aside for a while, this is a good time to fill the dots.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1090.jpg

I spent the rest of the afternoon sanding. Oh the joy! After I got it really flat, I routed the round overs. It took a little feathering to finish up sanding.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1091.jpg

I set up the "paint booth" and when the laundry is done I can spray some sealer. One thing I have seen but never saw explained is this mounting system. It is a PVC plumbing T. I screwed in a piece to the bottom and cut flat edges in it on an angle so when I clamp it in the vice it is on a steep enough angle that the work will stay put do matter how I spin it.

I can't believe how freaking hard this Purpleheart is to radius. Even with 50 grit this is taking FOREVER!
At least the color difference between the freshly sanded and unsanded wood shows me where I still have to sand and also ensures that I am staying on a level plane with the radius.

Today was build day. "truth be told I would rather lay a dozen more layers of clear and buff it out. But the deadline was here.
I shielded the cavities and scratched the channel for the ground wire.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1155.jpg

Then there is the ole Eldred Mod. I didn't have a chance to order the neck pickup and I had a esquire Bakelite pick guard. So one pickup it is, with room to grow. :-)

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1158.jpg

I got these cool heart shaped tuning heads from Bezdez on eBay. ( Really happy with the quality of his stuff.)

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1164.jpg

I buttoned it all up and it looks really great. The pictures in my basement suck. The colors are really great. It is a light purple metallic and the purple heard fretboard is sweet.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1165.jpghttp://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p23/whodatpat/IMAG1160.jpg

But...... I plugged it in and no sound. I have re-chased every wire and connection from pickup to jack. I even swapped out the caps and pots. NOTHING. Not even a ground buzz.
:-(
I will have to revisit this when the frustration subsides.

you are using an import switch, try this.

in your schematic pins 1-4 are on the bottom - pins 5-8 are on the top.

5 6 7 8
1 2 3 4

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

this should fix your issue

while you are in there - you might want to try the arlo west cocked wha circuit.
gander through my x12 builds, there is some shematics and a sound sample of an esquire using it.

yes, absolutely cut the pins apart.
the circuit you have in the photo would get wired like this.

pin 1 to pin 6 then to the back pot
pin 2 to pin 7
pin 3 to pin 8 then a cap then to the top of the front pot
pin 4 to the lug of the front pot
pin 5 to the hot pickup lead (white)

the rest is the same

I use the exact same switch in my builds.

I'm sure you're anxious to get the sound fixed, but while you're at it, I must say that's
a beautiful guitar you've built. I think the "purple" turned out great, especially with the
purpleheart fretboard. Nice job!

Holy Crap! I still have 2 Weeks! I had convinced myself before I started that yesterday was the deadline! I should really learn to read directions.

Thanks to EVERYONE for the compliments. I may pull it apart and add more clear coats. I want to burry the color.

I think I will get the wiring right with these directions. Than You for helping me through the complicated electronics part Motor City. I can't believe how complicated it can be to connect A to B.

I'm using that same switch from Bezdez on my Esquire and I had to figure it out by trial and error. I also cut the webs between the terminals. And I got positions 2 and 3 swapped somehow, but I still have all 3 "Esquire" positions, just out-of-sequence.

I'll go back and try MCT's diagram. Thanks for sharing it!

That did the trick. It howls now. Or course Peyton has decided it is not "purple enough.". Jam gonna make her look at it in the sun light, but if she still thinks so I will be slapping some more coats of purple and clear.

You could just flip it and leave the wiring alone. I am lazy like that.

Hey Pat and Peyton,

Just find a local to make you a nice purple suede strap. That should do the trick. Actually Scatter is quite accomplished in the leather and hide working arena. He may be able to help you out! Hmmmm, purple alligator :cool:

That is an excellent idea! I will send scatter a pm about a purple strap for her. Actually it would be nice to have a strap made to be as short as she needs it. Not sure I can afford the custom case.

Additional purple layers looked good. I got it back together tonight and she is trying to play it. I really want her to play the video, but she does not agree. I have a couple days to work on her. I also need to try to get a good picture that really captures the guitar.

Hey Pat,

You could put it in an open tuning for her and have her barre and strum with a light pick. Should work fine. Go Peyton!

I do like the open tuning. I have to pick up some light strings for yer tomorrow. I always wind up waiting a set in the build for setup and leveling frets.

Here it is all finished up. I wish I had a better camera.

Thank you! She is tickled pink (or purple) with it. But she did ask what it was worth. I said if you ever sell it it is worthless, if you keep it is priceless. :-)

Thank you TDPRI for putting this on again. Thank you to all of the other builders for your inspiration and support. I can already claim victory as I have the best prize offered in the challenge, a great guitar that my daughter and I built.

Awesome job! Great video it sounds very cool! Congrats on a sweet build. , just a heads up i noticed your video is about 8 seconds shy of the required 60 second minimum i'd hate to see ya get disqualified on a technicality.

Hey Pat and Peyton,

As Herb said, that looks and sounds fantastic! Did I hear the beginnings of "Smoke on the Water" in there? Really well done. Time to start practicing Peyton! Some folks will never have a guitar as cool as that in their whole lives. You must be proud. Well done papa Pat and Peyton!

I am getting on a plane for London for 2 weeks. That video will have to do. if the 8 seconds is the diference between 1st place and last, I will have to live with it. Like I said. I already got the best prize.

She really tried to learn Smoke on the Water. Only realized the Irony with it being a Deep Purple tune after she gave up on it for this video. She is still working on it and hopefully when I get home she will be ready to jam with me on it. Painters tape makes great numbered fret markers.

I wish I were only 8 seconds from first, more like 8 more years of building experience til first. Sure is a nice guitar and even that demo tells me that thing has rock-n-roll just waiting to get out. Awesome job.

Thank you tremendously. I can't believe I have pulled 12 votes. I don't have any misconception of placing in this thing, but to have a dozen people consider this guitar of an honorable mention warms my heart. I can't wait to get home and jam with Peyton.
