junk mutt March 14th, 2012, 03:46 PM Ok, Count me in. I've sat on the sidelines long enough and read the challenges from the last couple of years so now is the time to get my feet wet.
No photos yet ( have to figure out how to post em first,) but I'm thinking an all mahogany build, we'll see.
Anyway good luck to all. !!!
R. Stratenstein March 14th, 2012, 03:47 PM Ok, Count me in. I've sat on the sidelines long enough and read the challenges from the last couple of years so now is the time to get my feet wet.
No photos yet ( have to figure out how to post em first,) but I'm thinking an all mahogany build, we'll see.
Anyway good luck to all. !!!
Come on in, Junk mutt, welcome to the fray. Best of luck!
RogerC March 14th, 2012, 04:07 PM Good luck, JM! You're right, now's as good a time as any.
junk mutt March 14th, 2012, 04:30 PM Okey doky, here's the timber, some nice sapele mahogany. I'm thinking i can see a tele jr of some sort.
dazzypig March 14th, 2012, 04:46 PM The Sapele looks nice, making a wall cabinet out of it soon for college. Good luck with the build!
junk mutt March 14th, 2012, 05:02 PM Thanks fellas, I,m looking forward to it.
Forgot to say that the fretboard will be Amazaque. Whats that? Never heard of it?
Me neither. but its been sitting in my little workshop for a year or more so now's the time to use it.
crazydave911 March 14th, 2012, 11:49 PM Welcome, and good luck!
Dave
junk mutt March 15th, 2012, 05:33 PM Thanks Dave . Ok, lets get the ball rolling. Here is the obligatory glue up shot.
junk mutt March 15th, 2012, 05:40 PM All glued up. The sides were jointed square before I applied glue, so hopefully it'll have an invisible joint, we'll see.
Neck blank on the jointer planer getting nice and flat. Planed it down to 3/4" ready for the 1/4" fretboard.
junk mutt March 15th, 2012, 05:47 PM All the timber planed and ready for it to be cut into something resembling a telecaster tomorrow.
I'm a bit bothered that the neck blank is redder in colour than the body. I was going to leave it a natural mahogany but i may need to stain it red.
Oh well, lets see what tomorrow brings.
Mick
junk mutt March 16th, 2012, 02:44 PM Cutting out the body, this is the first time I've used a starret blade , cuts really nice and easy. Could be this really light mahogany though.
junk mutt March 16th, 2012, 02:54 PM The body, cut as close to the line as I feel comfortable with.
Found a nasty surprise waiting for me on the top horn,:twisted:
Did the old sawdust and glue trick, hope it works.
junk mutt March 16th, 2012, 02:58 PM Cutting out the neck blank.
Did I say I really like my new bandsaw blade?
I did get the truss rod slot routed but I forgot to take any pics of that, you all know how that work anyway.
junk mutt March 17th, 2012, 11:56 AM I decided to do a light carve on the body, did a shallow forearm carve, tummy contour and a slight contour round the edges.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/th_tdpri018.jpg
I wish I had'n't done the forearm contour now, it sort of looks lopsided, what do you think.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri029.jpg
Oh well, never mind, I can't stick it back on so I'll just carry on and try and blend the lower bout in more so it looks more symetrical. A couple more pics.
Sorry about the bad quality, it very dusty in that little shed.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri020.jpg
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri018.jpg
junk mutt March 17th, 2012, 12:12 PM I started working on the mortice joint today too. Busy boy eh? I had a couple of days off work so I made the most of it.
Back in work tomorrow though:cry:
Anyway I made a bit of a goof cutting out the mortice. I hogged most of the material out with a forstner bit and decided, because the timbers so nice to work on, that I'd try and finish the job with a chisel.
All was going fine until I went outside the line and took a smidgen off more than I wanted to.
Heres the fix, a small piece of veneer glued to the inside of the pocket:roll:. Never mind, it wont be seen. Next time I'll use the router.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri022.jpg
Got a nice tight fit once the glue dried.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri023.jpg
junk mutt March 17th, 2012, 12:21 PM I also began working on the fretboard. Told you I've been busy.
Its amazing how much you can do without the distraction of working for a living.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri024.jpg
Drilling for the small MOP dots, I don't know what everyone else is like, but no matter how hard I try I always manage to get at least one out of line.:mad::mad:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri027.jpg
Here it is, all glued up with plenty of clamps.
I used a couple of old templates to stop the clamps from damaging the neck and fretboard.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri028.jpg
Mick
abracadabra March 17th, 2012, 12:28 PM wow, this build is humming along nicely.
junk mutt March 17th, 2012, 12:59 PM Thanks Abracadabra, yeh its coming on, I don't really have a clear idea of what I want to do yet. I do know theres a wraparound bridge going on it.
Another pic of the carve.
junk mutt March 17th, 2012, 01:46 PM Does anyone know why I'm getting such small pictures?
I downsized them to 900x600 pixels, is this too small? I'm using photobucket as a host.:confused::confused:
Any help would be appreciated
thanks
Mick.
abracadabra March 17th, 2012, 01:53 PM if you upload the full-size image to photobucket you should be able to post the link to them here.
just click on the image in the photo album and when the full-size image appears just click on the 'IMG code' box on the right. it'll say 'Copied' and then you can just paste the link here in a reply box.
junk mutt March 17th, 2012, 01:59 PM Thanks mate, I just tried it and it works.:lol::roll:
junk mutt March 18th, 2012, 01:21 PM Ok, I decided to start a new neck.
I was'n't happy with the quality of the wood and the amazaque did'nt look that nice either.
So I rummaged around in the back of the shed and found some decent timber and will start again soon.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri.jpg
Heres the timber, nice piece of rosewood I forgot I had.
Mick
mkhhunt March 18th, 2012, 02:05 PM Nice build, that mahogany is great. Really cool idea on the top carve. Can't wait to see it progress.
junk mutt March 18th, 2012, 03:27 PM Cheers mate, the mahogany is a joy to work with after spending so much time with ash and maple!! Its kinder to the tools too
adirondak5 March 18th, 2012, 05:09 PM Looking good junk mutt , I likes the carve top. And you are right , mahogany is a pleasure to work with wink:
junk mutt March 19th, 2012, 01:49 PM Thanks Herb, its my first carve and I'm really liking it. I think its bringing out my artistic side.
As I said before, I'm going to make a new neck but I thought I'd show how I do a truss rod slot on my router table.
I find that doing it this way is more stable for me because I've got both hands on the timber instead of the router.
Ok, first off I pencil in the neck shape and a centre line on the blank. Then I mark out the truss rod length. I then transfer the rod length to the back of the board with a square. So now I have two lines on the back.
I put a guide fence on the table the exact distance away from the bit as the centre line to the outside of the blank.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri030.jpg
I then route from one line to the next, I complete the full depth in about five passes.
I get the depth I want by placing the rod to the bit.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri032.jpg
Truss rod slotted
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri031.jpg
And installed. Hope this helps someone. All in it took about 5 minutes.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri033.jpg
junk mutt March 19th, 2012, 01:59 PM Cut out the new blank on my little bandsaw. This thing has been a godsend.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri034.jpg
I had to glue an ear on the headstock because the plank was'nt wide enough.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri035.jpg
All clamped up. Glad I save that little triangular cut out. Makes a great caul.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri036.jpg
Tomorrow I'll stick the template to the neck and route it to shape and glue on the fret board.
Have fun.!!:grin::grin:
raito March 19th, 2012, 05:56 PM Drilling for the small MOP dots, I don't know what everyone else is like, but no matter how hard I try I always manage to get at least one out of line.:mad::mad:
Have you tried clamping a fence to the drill press table, and drilling before you taper the neck? That way you're holes will always be the same distance from one side of the neck, at least.
junk mutt March 20th, 2012, 01:20 PM Thanks for the tip raito, I'll try that.
I've always been a little gung-ho about things and generally just get stuck in, I suppose I'll just have to stand back a bit and think WWPD? (what would Preeb do):grin:
junk mutt March 21st, 2012, 04:02 PM Alright, this is where I'm up to as of tonight. I had to make a new neck because I was'n't happy with the other one I made, which is now in the bin.
Yesterday I cut the fret slots, drilled for the dot inlays and glued the new fretboard onto the neck.
Routed the fretboard flush with the neck
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri037.jpg
I sanded the body a little more, have to be careful with that orbital sander, it takes a lot off very quickly:smile::!:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri039.jpg
So here is where I'm at.
Please feel free to comment, good or bad.:twisted: I'm thick skinned so I can take it.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri040.jpg
and another for good luck.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri042.jpg
In the next couple of days, I'll radius the fretboard to 10" , carve the neck and drill for the tuners. And with a little luck I'll route out for the humbuckers.
Still waiting on my badass style bridge. Have fun.!!
RogerC March 21st, 2012, 05:13 PM Lookin' good to me! I'm a sucker for dark fret boards, so you get a thumbs up from me:grin:
junk mutt March 22nd, 2012, 04:11 PM Thanks roger! Loving your build by the way
Ok, so I radiused the fretboard and glued in the MOP dots, sorry no pics of this process, my fingers were stuck together with superglue:oops::lol:
Got my frets cut to roughly the size I wanted.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri003-1.jpg
And pressed em in with my home-made caul in the drill press.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri007.jpg
Got them all seated nicely ready for the ends to be trimmed with my dads old cutters. I ground the cutters flat so I can get close to the fretboard.
WARNING !! Dusty photo coming up !!
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri008.jpg
Filed the ends flush with the fretboard then filed an angle on them
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri010.jpg
I'll finish off the ends later on with a needle file set and give em a polish with varying degrees of sandpaper. Should'nt need much leveling with a little luck.
RogerC March 22nd, 2012, 04:15 PM To me, that is the part that makes me say "Oh Yeah! now we have a guitar!"
junk mutt March 22nd, 2012, 04:18 PM I'm glad the days are getting a bit warmer so I can work outside, I don't have a lot of room in the "workshop". I love this little shack though.:cool:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri004-1.jpg
flatfive March 22nd, 2012, 04:35 PM Nice work, junk mutt, you're making good progress!
Our builds have a lot in common, both with set,
mahogany necks and wraparound bridges. I want
to see how (or if, maybe) you'll treat the neck/body joint.
Barncaster March 22nd, 2012, 04:39 PM I'm glad the days are getting a bit warmer so I can work outside, I don't have a lot of room in the "workshop". I love this little shack though.:cool:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri004-1.jpg
Hey Junk,
A man must have a shack or as we say in the US, a man cave. It is an essential for our mental health and well-being. By the way, very well done with the guitar!
Barncaster
junk mutt March 22nd, 2012, 05:27 PM Hi flatfive, thanks for the kind words. The neck is just a standard neck with a heel and a 3 degree angle, The neck pocket is just a standard size but deeper, if you know what i mean?
I left the side of lower part of the heel intact so I could get more glue surface, Hope it holds up ok.
Heres a coupla pics that might explain it better:roll:
junk mutt March 22nd, 2012, 05:32 PM Thanks Barncaster, I know what you mean about a place to escape. I leave her to her soaps and she leaves me " to play with my wood" as she says. :-)
junk mutt March 24th, 2012, 03:19 PM Hi all, Hope everyone's having as much fun as me  Ok, I got a bit more done in the last couple of days, I got the neck profile done- going for a nice chunky c profile.
Here it is roughed out. My main tools for this is a spoke shave and rasp then sanded later using 80, 120, 240, and 400 grit paper.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri045.jpg
Heres the heel shaped more or less to how I want it, I can fine tune it later in the sanding stage.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri047.jpg
Fuzzy shot of the headstock transition. I'm really good at taking crap photos:roll:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri052.jpg
junk mutt March 24th, 2012, 03:33 PM Routing out for the neck humbucker, I'll route for the bridge p'up when the wraparound gets here.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri048.jpg
Drilling the wiring channel with a long 1/4" bit into the control cavity.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri049.jpg
Glued in the neck. I did this now so I can start sanding the body and neck both at the same time and try to blend in the neck joint so its comfortable.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri054.jpg
adirondak5 March 24th, 2012, 03:34 PM Looking good junk mutt
junk mutt March 24th, 2012, 04:27 PM Cheers Herb, I've just been browsing the forum and there is some outstanding craftsmenship going on. I'm not including myself on that long list:grin:
But i'm having a blast and I'll have a nice-ish guitar at the end that I'll love.
paulmarr March 24th, 2012, 04:56 PM Hi JM
I wanted to make my guitar with that type of set neck but didn't know how to go about it so I am watching with great interest - great job so far!
nosmo March 24th, 2012, 05:05 PM I sure hope mine turns out as 'nice-ish' as yours. You obviously have high standards - it looks great!
junk mutt March 24th, 2012, 05:10 PM Thanks Paul, I kinda copied this LP JR neck joint, where the full width of the neck is the tenon. Does this make sense?
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/jrneck.jpg
junk mutt March 24th, 2012, 05:13 PM Thanks Nosmo, I do get a bit OCD about things sometimes:lol:
junk mutt March 25th, 2012, 12:25 PM Got home from work at 2.30 today so went straight to the shed and rounded over the heel and blended it with the neck so its a bit more comfortable to play.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri060.jpg
I also sanded the body and neck with 150 grit. I'm going to leave it at that until the bridge arrives just in case I mark the body while I'm routing out the bridge p'up cavity. I hate sanding, its a horrible part of the job but it needs to be done.
:twisted::twisted::twisted::lol:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri055.jpg
A few more pics of where I'm up to.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri059.jpg
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri058.jpg
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri057.jpg
Got a lot more sanding to do yet, probably go up to 400 grit but I'm done for today, Time to catch up on the other builds.
Seeya soon.
Allthesound March 25th, 2012, 12:29 PM What a great job on that neck joint truly impressive! That tele is gonna be a head turner for sure. Keep up the good work.
junk mutt March 25th, 2012, 12:40 PM Thanks Steve, I'm actually really enjoying the carving and shaping aspect of this build having never done one like it before.:grin:its a learning curve for me.
This may not be the last carve I do !:wink:
I'm loving your build too, man that is one fine slab of mahogany!!
adirondak5 March 25th, 2012, 01:57 PM Very nice junk mutt, the neck joint looks great , so does the rest . Carving and shaping necks is one of my favorite things , looks like its pretty high on your list by the looks of things.
crazydave911 March 25th, 2012, 02:07 PM What a sweet build!, that is some fine mahogany woodworking
Dave
junk mutt March 25th, 2012, 02:08 PM Thanks Herb, yeah I love making the neck the most too, but it was really frustrating at the beginning when i first ventured into neck building. Man, I must have junked about 5 necks before I got a decent one I could play!!
junk mutt March 25th, 2012, 02:13 PM What a sweet build!, that is some fine mahogany woodworking
Dave
Thanks dave!! I've been following your thread closely , I can't wait to hear that 12 string sing!!
RogerC March 25th, 2012, 03:29 PM Looking really good, Mutt. I think I see a set neck tele in my future...
junk mutt March 25th, 2012, 03:35 PM Do it Roger! and thanks. I think when i do my next I'll do a longer tenon into the body though.
abracadabra March 25th, 2012, 03:38 PM wow, you must be feeling good about this. great job.
tklaavo March 25th, 2012, 04:00 PM LP jr meets Tele = Everything is Great
My favourite models..
Excellent work here!
nosmo March 25th, 2012, 05:44 PM Oh no....you junked 5 necks before you got one right? I gotta say that does not really give me a lot of confidence as I'm very close to shaping my first one:shock:
junk mutt March 26th, 2012, 10:26 AM Hi tklaavo. Thanks. Yeah those two are my faves too. I was considering putting p90s in but I'm saving those for an actual LP JR DC build I'v got planned. I've got a nice pair of Epi 57 buckers going in this one.
junk mutt March 26th, 2012, 10:32 AM Oh no....you junked 5 necks before you got one right? I gotta say that does not really give me a lot of confidence as I'm very close to shaping my first one:shock:
HaHa:lol:. Don't worry nosmo, that was before I found this great site where everyone's willing to share. Its called TDPRI  Seriously though, there are some fantastic neck build tutorials by the likes of Jack Wells and others. You'll be fine mate.
junk mutt March 27th, 2012, 11:26 AM Not much of an update, still waiting for the bridge to get here:roll:
Iknew I should'n't have ordered a chinese one:lol:
Not to worry. I did get the bone nut shaped and slotted, Here I'm using the half pencil trick to get the height of the frets.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri061.jpg
I then mark the string location with a craft knife and then i file to just a smidge above the pencil line. I'm using the hosco files from philly luthiers. They work great.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri063.jpg
I'll sand and polish it later. I do like me a smooth nut.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri064.jpg
junk mutt March 27th, 2012, 11:29 AM I also did a rear route cover. Should look ok after I've sanded out the rough bits.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri062.jpg
emoney March 27th, 2012, 12:00 PM There are just so many threads that I'm missing a lot more than I'm catching. This one,
for example. We've got some similar approaches going on to this thing too. Great work
so far. Be careful though, next thing you know you'll be carving everything you come into
contact with. Wife wanted a desk for her room built and she didn't care for the "carved top"
I put on it initially. Had to go back and re-do that one.
junk mutt March 27th, 2012, 02:16 PM :lol: Yeah you may be right Emoney. Loving your build by the way.
Sharp5 March 28th, 2012, 07:57 PM Nice work.
junk mutt March 31st, 2012, 02:23 PM Thanks sharpfive. Okay, not been up to much in the last few days, just sanding, sanding oh and more sanding:smile:. sanded the body and neck up to 320 grit and slapped on some grain filler'
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri065.jpg
Then sanded it off again.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri066.jpg
The keen eyed among you may be wondering where the little recesses for the controls are? Well guess what? I sanded em out!! I prefer the cleaner look of a flat area in that spot and they were'n't too deep so it was no trouble for the disk sander and some 80grit.
So after grain filling that area again and sanding back, the above pic is what I'm left with. Not too shabby.
First coat of sanding sealer, this stuff stinks bad:shock:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri069.jpg
After lightly sanding with 400grit I sealed it again, don't think it was necessary but it could'n't hurt. after sanding it back lightly I was left with this.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri068.jpg
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri070.jpg
junk mutt March 31st, 2012, 02:32 PM Got the first coat of tru oil on today, I'll put another coat on later. I'll see what it looks like after 5 or 6 coats. Love this tru oil
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri071.jpg
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri072.jpg
Oh, by the way, I'm STILL waiting for the bridge I ordered from China.
So yesterday I bought another one from a guy in Cornwall. Hopefully it will be here Monday or Tuesday.
More updates then when I do the obligatory mock up shot.
nosmo March 31st, 2012, 02:47 PM I see you used sanding sealer under the Tru-Oil. Is that how it's done? I'm not the greatest finisher (love to cut & build - no patience for finishing). I am planning to use Tru-Oil on my bass.
Looks great by the way!
junk mutt March 31st, 2012, 02:57 PM Hi nosmo, Thanks. I don't know if thats "how its done" but i always use sanding sealer no matter what finish i put on later. But I do like that tru oil.
junk mutt April 2nd, 2012, 11:07 AM Well, the new bridge came YAY! The uk bridge not the Chinese one:roll: Still waiting on that one. So I did a little mock-up.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri012.jpg
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri011.jpg
Tried with the black/silver top hat knobs.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri013.jpg
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri014.jpg
Mmm... Leaning more towards the top hats.
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri015-1.jpg
Got 3 coats of oil on. I'll try another coupla coats and leave it at that I think. Nearly There !!!
adirondak5 April 2nd, 2012, 12:19 PM Looks great junk mutt , tophat knobs look much better on there. :)
ChaosRocker April 2nd, 2012, 12:46 PM The top hats look better with the black pickup surrounds, if it had chrome surrounds then the chrome knobs would be better...
crazydave911 April 2nd, 2012, 12:54 PM Sweet!
emoney April 2nd, 2012, 12:54 PM Very nice. I like the black ones better too. Something about this guitar just screams,
"PLAY ME!!!!"
junk mutt April 2nd, 2012, 03:28 PM Thanks guys, yeah I think your right, I'll go with the black knobs:smile:
emoney- I can't wait to get it up and running and start playing it. It feels really comfortable to hold and really light too. Its 7 1/2 lbs as it stands now:cool:
BUT !!! I knew I should have waited for the bridge to get here before I routed for the bridge pick-up, because this happened:mad::mad::oops:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv302/kaznmick/tdpri016.jpg
The bridge is bang on scale at 25 1/2" and is a hair away from touching the surround.
Now, what to do? It seems I have two choices that I can see, I can move the bridge back a little using the adjusting screws on the posts and then move the saddles forward as far as they'll go - OR I could go the more drastic route and take a 1/4" extra from the neck side of the pick-up route.:?:
Or I could even leave it as it is and have an extra twangy guitar:lol::lol:
What would you guys do?
Barncaster April 2nd, 2012, 03:36 PM Thanks guys, yeah I think your right, I'll go with the black knobs:smile:

Hey Junk Mutt,
Extra twang please
Barncaster
junk mutt April 2nd, 2012, 04:14 PM Hey Barncaster, Yeah, its sort of growing on me to leave it as it is and see what it sounds like:lol:. I can always change it later if I don't like it, right? Right:lol:
nialldabass April 2nd, 2012, 05:24 PM I thought the E string should be 3 or 4 mill longer to get correct intonation rather than spot on anyway, so that should give you a bit of leeway, looking damn fine and top hats for me too
junk mutt April 3rd, 2012, 10:38 AM Hi Niall, and thanks. yeah you may be right. Should have a coupla mms leeway. Loving your build by the way,
junk mutt April 6th, 2012, 06:48 AM Well, I wired it it up, did a basic set up, set the string height and polished the nut. And guess what? ITS ALIVE !!!:lol:
I'm really pleased with the result, its been a blast:grin:
Should have some photos up soon, just waiting for the bat flatteries to charge up. Oh, and the dreaded video:roll:
nosmo April 6th, 2012, 08:38 AM Oh my! That is one sweet guitar! Congratulations, beautiful job
dilbone April 6th, 2012, 08:57 AM something about a wraparound bridge on a tele, I'm on my second one...very nice job...
emoney April 6th, 2012, 09:15 AM Junk, the good news is if you later decide to move the p'up forward, you could easily put a plug
in the current route as it should blend really well. By the time the surround was on the
new positioned p'up, you'd never know you missed.
Or, leaving it as-is is perfectly cool as well. Nice job!
junk mutt April 6th, 2012, 11:07 AM Thanks for the nice comments guys, I really appreciate them.
Ok, so here are the finished pics, Like I said before, I have had a blast taking part in this years Challenge (my first)but I'm under no illusions that I'm going to come anywhere near winning:lol: After all, there are some truly beautiful guitars being built and a couple of truly unique ones too.:cool:
But I did'nt enter to win, I wanted to take part in something that has been inspirational to me in the past and maybe to get someone else out there interested in building guitars. This is a fantastic website with great members, not to mention the master builders like Jack Wells, preeb and so many others who inspired me to get off my arse and get in the shed and just have a go.
So, if you're contemplating starting a build, do it. You won't be disappointed.
And it won't be your last. Oh no.:grin::cool:
So here are the pics. Enjoy

RogerC April 6th, 2012, 11:16 AM Well done! Whatcha got planned for the next one?
junk mutt April 6th, 2012, 12:10 PM Thanks Roger. Well, for the next one, something a little different from this one. I'm thinking double bound red esquire maybe? One piece maple neck? Hot rails pick-up? Who knows.!!
volowv April 6th, 2012, 12:18 PM cool. i was checking out your thread the other day when you were concerned about the rear PU, looks like you just shoehorned it in there. great job. where's the video?
junk mutt April 6th, 2012, 12:24 PM Thanks volowy, Yeah, I did what I was going to do at first. I moved all the saddles forward as far as they would go and moved the bridge back a little bit, seems to have done the trick.
Video nasty coming soon.
Barncaster April 6th, 2012, 12:56 PM Hey Junk,
Can't wait to hear it!
Barncaster
flatfive April 6th, 2012, 01:16 PM Great job, junk mutt! Mahogany/humbuckers/wraparound bridge
is a great combo.
You forgot one little thing: your name/logo/whatever on the
headstock!
junk mutt April 6th, 2012, 01:33 PM Ok here it is. I only have a crappy little camera so please forgive the rubbish quality.
e125qEANvso&context=C4db9268ADvjVQa1PpcFObcRMvsTBnPvhf3AY-3DlvE0d7Xjps_c
junk mutt April 6th, 2012, 01:36 PM Thanks barncaster, glad you like it:grin:
Hi Flatfive, thanks. You know, I've never put a logo on any of my guitars:roll:
Suppose I'll have to come up with one. Any Ideas?
flatfive April 6th, 2012, 01:53 PM It sounds great! You must be very pleased.
One thing you can try for a logo: play with the calligraphic pen
feature of Inkscape. It has all kinds of settings and will
make what you draw with the mouse look artistic.
emoney April 6th, 2012, 02:28 PM Sounds to me like "Junk Mutt Special" fits it perfect.
Great job!!!
junk mutt April 6th, 2012, 02:33 PM Thanks guys, I think making the video was the worst part for me:oops:

nialldabass April 6th, 2012, 06:17 PM Congrats man what a great job, glad the bridge worked out, and it sound fantastic, only the rules state the video be at least 1min long, yours was 58 second so I think You should do another one with a little more lead work, that sounded really nice at the end, I want more:mrgreen:
Guitarnut April 6th, 2012, 07:19 PM Sounds fantastic! I love the tone. Well done!

emoney April 9th, 2012, 10:01 AM Ok, I'm saying the same to you as I did Gearhead....now you're just showing off because
you've built an awesome guitar AND you're already done (while some of us are way behind).
Your playing is just fine, btw. Not all of us are Hendrix-reincarnated.
junk mutt April 9th, 2012, 10:22 AM Cheers chaps! emoney- I had to finish quickly so I could get the chance to read all these great threads:grin: There are some phenomenal builders out there!!
Niall - you're a funny guy- I like that- but no more videos please!!
Honestly, that was the worst part for me:lol: As you can tell, I'm not a natural showman!!
Thanks again
Mick
czook April 22nd, 2012, 02:25 PM I really like the contours and transitions on your build. I have yet to post my video since I spend most of my time working on them when I should be playing them ;) You and your guitar sound great.
junk mutt April 22nd, 2012, 02:56 PM Hey, Thanks Chuck, I appreciate it,
I know what you mean about this building malarkey, just not enough time in the day to play the guitars we build are there?
I love the grain pattern in your body by the way. Er. the guitar body.
Don't even know if you have any grain in your body.
junk mutt May 10th, 2012, 03:40 PM Woohoo! my threads back up!! Thanks Paul  It went awol there for a little while. My fault really, I was so enthralled with the other great builds that I neglected to keep my own updated.:lol:
