Just a sketch

front and back of laminated beech with mahogany veneer glued on it.
A core out of something else, also the few points where it is important to have some extra support for the two wings.

Next week a normal scale layout.

And we're on...

I always draw 2 lines before I cut out any contours ...

Cut out top and back:

Detail of a +/- outline for the core pieces:

Sandwich for the core:
- 6mm laminated beech
- 1,2mm mahogany
- 10mm laminated beech
- 1,2mm mahogany
- 6mm laminated beech

[...]

What's the reason?

stijnkenens
March 18th, 2012, 11:14 AM
I started doing this with a top and a back for an acoustic guitar: but only the outer line, just to be sure it is always big enough.

And now ... It does not take more time, so with 2 lines I cut in the middle
I think it is just a little autistic tick I have.
That's why I like watching little shop tours on You tube: You will notice you're not the only one with those ticks

It would look like this:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/fanned%20caster/DSC09692.jpg

First attempt on a tele, second attempt on a multi-scale guitar.
With this TDPRI challenge there are 3 multi-scale guitars in the running (another tele for a friend and a selmer macafferri copy ...)

stijnkenens
March 19th, 2012, 12:58 PM
Started to cut out everything I need ...

Top and back, without veneer:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01073.jpg

I've copied the core design on a semi see-through paper, and translated to the mahogany birch sandwich:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01074.jpg

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01075.jpg

No pictures of cutting it, my mind is focused on the line and not cutting my fingers ...

Layout on the back:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01076.jpg

close up:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01078.jpg

My first idea was to put veneer on both sides of the top and back, but now I think I just glue a piece of veneer on top and bottom of the core units ...

So You will have a light inner side and a mahogany outside .

March 19th, 2012, 01:00 PM
Forgot one pic ...

Total weight of the body, not routed/sanded, without cavities and outside veneer ...

stijnkenens
March 26th, 2012, 07:20 AM
Whoo ... Pressure

There is a lot going on in the shop, so I have to work on it on evenings ...

Ok, here we go:

After glueing the sandwich core together, I sawed the components, and glued a few pieces of veneer on the outside.

Cutting through the sheets:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01085.jpg

And after that I sanded the sides square:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01086.jpg

Now it looks like this:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01087.jpg

First I thought to mirror the center-core, but it looks more natural like this !!!

Next step: glueing veneer on back and top.
I'm thinking to use a thinner birch laminate for top and back, 4 in stead of 6mm, So I'm missing 4 mm in thickness... Have to rethink some details ...

s.

stijnkenens
March 30th, 2012, 11:50 AM
Ok, so much for the 4 mm laminate ...
Used a band saw with big teeth ...

Looks good ...

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01129.jpg

Not so good ...

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01130.jpg

To the lathe:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01132.jpg

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01134.jpg

This looks nice:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01135.jpg

To the big fellah:

first cut veneer:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01131.jpg

Glue:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01136.jpg

layers of veneer:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01137.jpg

Haha, I thought I would see you yesterday, still on your bike? :)

It's an old furniture press, for glueing veneers on to cupboard doors.
I think we use it maximum 5 times a year ... but it is handy when you need it !

fresh from the press

a veneered top and back ...
3 sheets were to small for one top, didn't like to match them perfectly, so i'm gonna route 2 slots and ad some other veneer between the sheets.

Ok, did some work today ...
I have some projects drying on the wall, so we go one with this one...

I spend the day in this cave:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01154.jpg

Routing the 2 slots for the maple veneer:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01151.jpg

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01157.jpg

But I found the top and back to tick so sanded it down...

7 mm:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01158.jpg

sandin'

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01159.jpg

5 mm, it can bow again ...

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01160.jpg

prepared some maple veneer and glued it in the slots:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01162.jpg

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01163.jpg

After a few hours let them loose and sanded the outside of top and back, now we have this:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01164.jpg

And smooth inside:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01165.jpg

Still have to deal with something predicted, but didn't think it was this large ...

behind routed, in the front un-routed:

Just with double stick tape to the template:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01198.jpg

After that, time to glue the first pieces of the core:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01199.jpg

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01200.jpg

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01203.jpg

So I had to tune the pot ...

Ike57
April 10th, 2012, 11:36 AM
Are you still going to use that flamed maple for the neck? I wonder how you're going to do that. And what about the truss rod?

Or, are you going to use fiber for the neck

Questions, questions, but I guess you're not going to tell us - yet

And no, I'm not going to tell you how I'm going to do it (have to figure it out for myself first ...)

Ok, one little sneak preview:

Two blocks for neck and head, carbon rods and, sheet of flexible plywood and a to big piece for the fretboard

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01221.jpg

Still way to heavy: little less than 800 grams (1.76 Lbs)
a normal neck, with fretwire is around 500 grams (1.1 Lbs)

Maybe I have to change the big headstock for the tele one, because I'm aiming for light weight ...

Since I saw your turned wiring tubes the other day, a scary amount of my time is spent imagining how this will look at the end if the challenge; I'm picturing a weird Rube Goldberg-meets-wooden-steampunk-but-organic look, if that makes any sense.

stijnkenens
April 12th, 2012, 01:45 PM
Steampunk, i like ...

Now on with the neck, trying to work a few hours a day on the tdpri guitar ...
(not easy because it is a really interesting build for myself ...)

Don't think my English is good enough for explaining everything, but i'll give it a try ...

I cut out the neck blank and glued a piece of scrap against it.

Drew 3 channels on the inside and took it to the little tiny table saw.
The outer channels are perpendicular to the sides, the middle is just in the center.

With the scrap piece glued to one side, I can plane every guidance I want...

soit, pictures:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01229.jpg

The carbon rods drops +/- 3 mm in the fretboard (witch is 7 mm in thickness)

They are for sturdiness and holding head and neckblock together.

The neckblock:

put it on the fretboard and drew lines where the channels are, than just sawed them by hand, and removed the leftovers with the smallest chisel I have.:

And to make it easier for you to concentrate on this build, I'm willing to take

I'm going for the tele headstock...

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01257.jpg

First drew some lines and sawed and chiselled 3 channels :

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01272.jpg

Now the neck looks like this:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01276.jpg

stijnkenens
April 17th, 2012, 04:10 AM
I love the "newtherapist" way, but for now I still do it by hand ...

How do I start...

I have 3 fret positions marked on the neck mould.

Zero fret (start / nut) 7th fret (perpendicular fret) 12th fret (halfway the stringlength)

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01327.jpg

I put the fretboard on the mould and draw the fret marks on it:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01328.jpg

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01329.jpg

Then I mark the outer strings (3mm from the side at the nut and 4 at the 12th)

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01330.jpg

With the ruler in place (zero 7th and 12th as a reference)
I print out the 2 scales for treble and bass at the stew mac site:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01326.jpg

And point out the fret positions on both sides of the fretboard:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01331.jpg

After that I connect the 2 points:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01332.jpg

And cut by hand, with a support, which you put on the perfect spot with some light hammer blows:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01333.jpg

Until teeth depth:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01334.jpg

Do it for all the frets, so the outer teeth of the saw are on both sides of the pencil line.

Just for the nut you have to cut between the lines.

Et voilá:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01336.jpg

Just for the looks of it: even the nut is fanned ...

Fanned frets are cool.

But unless my eyes are mistaken or the photos in some way are misleading, I think something is wrong with your first fret. It seems to have almost the same distance to the second fret all the way, while it is much closer to the nut at one side compared to the other.

Or to put it another way: I looks like there is no fanning of the frets from fret 1 to fret 2.

And BTW: Fanning the nut is not for the looks, it is a quite essential part of the guitar scale of a fanned fret guitar. The nut is simply a fret with string slots, actually.

I am not trying to be negative here, but I do think something is off, at least with the measurements between first and second fret.

On with the neck:

First I've cut a little rabat on both sides of the fretboard.

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01379.jpg

I lined out the head and tail, and drew a neck shape on them:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01380.jpg

Then I shaped the contour with rasp, file and sandpaper.

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01384.jpg

What's a bunny rabat?
Couldn't find the word for it, so I thought you will understand what I mean.

Epoxy for the carbon, titebond for the wood ...

That fix you show a couple posts back, where you remove the knot and replace it with a little triangle inlay, is that on the "inside" of the guitar? At first I was thinking, "uh oh, not gonna look too good" - but for a fix on the inside where it is so hard to see anyways, wow, what attention to detail! The build is looking very cool, love the pics of the body assembled, looks like modern architecture - i think i have been inside that building! And the neck, like a modern concrete bridge, very neat. Can't wait to see the whole thing assembled and playing. Excellent work, very inspirational!

It was word play. You cut a rabbet. The little furry animal in the picture above is a rabbit. It's pronounced the same in english.

I had the link with the rabbit, when Nosmo posted the pic.
I couldn't find a word for rabbat in English so I just went lazy ...

The triangle inlay is on the inside, so I just wanted it to be neat.
You can hardly see it!

Confusing. I think British woodworkers used to refer to rabbets as "rebates." I saw an ad once for a "rebate plane" and wondered why they intended to offer a discount (in America, a "rebate" is money that manufacturers give back to customers who buy their stuff.)

Anyway. I'm completely excited to hear this thing play, Stijn. Keep it up!

Finally I'm starting to understand how this thing goes together. I was hoping I would catch on soon, I was feeling kinda dumb. What a cool design, I wish I could play it, it's just so unique and cool.

Yes Muzikp,

But did he tell you about the hollow core copper wire he's going to use? Our Stijn is mass phobic shall we say and this build is cool as s&$t! Who else here has a Tele with insides that look like the insides of a scandinavian shopping mall. God my G.I. Joe wants to so play in there. I can't believe the 6 year old inner monologue just came out..........

Indeed, when you search for 'rabbet plane' of 'rebate plane' on a search engine it will give the same pictures.

Hollow copper wire would be fun, but it is hard to find ...

My girlfriend suggested to keep the neck open as is, but it would be hard to play, I guess ...

And @ musikp: don't feel dumb, for me it was the same feeling, preparing all the little pieces, and only when I've put them together, it started to look like a guitar, and I knew where I was heading to ...

Body is almost finished, tomorrow string ferules and the jack pocket.

But this is what I had today:

Little packet with some hardware:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01399.jpg

Did some routin' on the neckpocket and pup cavity:

cleaned the sides around the pocket:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01404.jpg

And the electronics cavity:

And it should keep the pot from spinning when you tighten the nut.

Yep, he did

williamsanders
April 24th, 2012, 02:49 PM
It looks like he's using a lefty bridge as well. Probably the fanned-idea is impossible to use with a righty bridge (the slanting of the pickup would be too far off), so he's using a lefty bridge, and thus routing.

Looks awesome Stijn, but the neck... I have NO idea what you're planning to do with that :D

I don't need to much room for wires, but the spinning idea is useful, didn't think about it...

The volume pot isn't round at all, you still have the lugs pointing out:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01202.jpg

And yep, it's routed the lefty way, I use a lefty bridge for a multi-scale neck, like the one in this thread:

Really curious about this one's sound!

Fixed it already, but have to find some spare parts ...

French polish the old fashioned way I suppose ?

Of course, is there an other way???

Pics:

French polish:
First brushed some layers of shellac on the body, sanded it down and took the bottles of alcohol and dissolved shellac out of the closet:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01474.jpg

After an half an hour:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01475.jpg

On to the neck:

I was afraid I would squeeze the neck, without something supporting the pliable triplex ...

So I glued a piece of balsa over the carbon in the middle:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01529.jpg

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01528.jpg

Planed it down:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01534.jpg

And rounded the sides:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01535.jpg

Measuring the contour:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01536.jpg

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01537.jpg

And translate it to the pliable triplex

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01538.jpg

With a bit of luck I've got myself a neck tomorrow ...

Drilled dots:

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01567.jpg

drilled holes for tuners and burned the headstock:

prepared the lefty bridge for multi-scale neck:

first I've put the bridge on the right spot, then I used a loose bridge saddle to calculate the right position for treble and bass E string.

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr111/stijnkenens/TDPRI%202012%20build%20challenge/DSC01576.jpg

use a pointy thing for the right location and drill:

You could even snap a corner out of the bridge to make it fit the soundhole

I've heard that option before, and was also my first thought.

But its the place where you rest your right hand, I don't think it would be a pleasant feeling ...

So the lacquer must've doubled the weight of that neck.

Well, there's no good music without suffering ánd it would reduce the weight.:lol:

Na, don't think so, I drilled the holes for the neck mounting screws.
The weight I lost there is back on with the lacquer

Somebody mentioned .007 strings, they will also reduce the weight

In fact I don't want this thread to close, I want to read peoples thoughts about this guitar.

I'm gonna ask Paul about it.

thanks for the kind words, I have to play it and be sure the neck does not move ...

Before the thread closes, my thoughts: Not my style at all, but nevertheless an intriguing and challenging piece of design. I'm a fan of the turned-plywood wiring channels, and of the organic nature of the inside of the guitar. I applaud your refreshing take on an old design.

WOW Stijn,

There is an airyness to the sound. It is just beautiful. That is the type of guitar that doesn't give you the normally expected tones but rather one you have to sit with and play for a long time to understand what it can do. A complex beast! I really like it!

Ok, I have an account in this forum for a while now, but I wanted to wait for a good occasion for my first post.

Amazing build Stijn!

I followed it from the beginning, a very inspiring topic.
Do you take it to the next DGBM?

Very, very good! I love the visual design and the concept of fanned frets. How does it sound without an amplifier? Is it anywhere near a thinline, sound wise?

I had the guitar tested by some people, they all love it !

It needs a little TLC after a few days now, but that's normal, I can live with that.

I think I have to go through with the hollow neck, really proud on that !

I love the overall design of the guitar.

I'd love to see a strat built this way.

Thanks, a strat is possible, I think, but a trem for multiscale neck isn't that easy.
I know one where the luthier used a normal trem, and just fanned the frets out toward the nut.

what about a patent?

To expensive ...
And to late, it is already on the web. I don't care. A patent is only good when you have the money to defend it ! First lesson in school about patent and design rights !

I'm also surprised there are 4 dutch speaking people in the first 15 winners, cool !!!

And of course: congrats to all the winners !
