My own personal Danny Gatton in action :-)

Know I get annoying going on and on about John all the time (my poor friends!), but LISTEN to this guy play guitar!

I love him because he's my husband...but I respect the pants off him (easy now ;-) ) because he's so damn good. And the most humble boy on Earth...that's my favorite part. He's funny and he's sincerely the best person I've ever met in my life, he'd do anything in the world for anyone, such a sweetheart, and he's good to me...but I married him for the guitar lessons ;-)

Alright...proud wife moment over *blush*

You CAN actually hear a little bit of that cartoon-like soundtrack thing that was part of the Gatton sound.

I think I hear a little Redd in their too!

Stannard is great....and I try to steal as much as I can from him.

I would hope he would have a vid ... I want to know what he is thinking as he plays...

he has a great approach to the neck.... and knows what sounds good. Talent is tough to copy....so playing like him is a challenge....but a welcome one. I hope he keeps posting on youtube.....

it's nice to hear a country guy playing interesting tasteful colorful licks, not just shredding out flashy stuff. He is a top notch player with a great tone and touch, all in the hands.

Tell us how you really feel Mandy.

That's about the only thing I do well ;-)

He's a good 'un! And learning how he thinks is exactly what I'd like to learn - I don't want to just learn a lick, I want to learn how to come up with it on the fly, under pressure, in the heat of the moment. Dammit. Before he takes off on the second bit he shouts something like, "again?" because he wasn't sure if he was supposed to keep going or stop...improvisation that's interesting - that's all I want as a player. Dammit. :-)

John played that great! nice tone too!

Re: the improvising... see that's the thing, you either intuitively feel it... or you don't. The other thing that goes with that is... playing exactly what the song needs, not too much and not too little. Some folks can hear it in their head and it translates directly to their fingers and guitar.

Not planning any trips, but just curious, are you guys playing out anywhere? I know from reading on here you both are professional musicians, but would love to see a youtube of the both of you performing together. Great stuff!!! John, we all aspire to play like you, very good playin', keep posting stuff so we can try and figure out how the heck you do that!

Awwww, thanks guys !!
Had a great time in Dallas, Mark is a much jazzier C6 type steely than Dave so I had to adjust pretty quickly but it worked fine :)
The amp was a solid state 'Telonics' rig !! They are designed for Steel players with stereo 15" cabs but they made me two 12" cabs for the weekend and it was a REAL shock !!!
Had a little tweak on arrival and was knocked out with the sound.
Ken Fox is still repairing after his shop fire so didn't make it and as Mark and I were playing in the 'Telonics' room I opted to try one of theirs - I kinda missed my little tweed friend though :-)

Re: the improvising... see that's the thing, you either intuitively feel it... or you don't. .

With all due respect, I disagree. While some people definitely have a knack for improvisation, it can be learned if you don't have that knack.

To be a good improv player, you have to practice it. Licks that you've learned elsewhere won't automatically fit themselves in other songs unless you practice doing it. Put on a backing track and start pulling out your licks in random order, try making up some of your own on the fly, etc... mix it all up. Play them in different keys and over different grooves. It will happen for you if you keep doing it.

Aargh! I got an error message when I clicked on the link. Tried another computer with up-to-date software, same thing. I'm a big fan of John's playing and I'd love to listen. Anyone else have the same problem or know how to solve it?

Awww, rats! Ken's shop burnt? That guy is the Peavey Fex guru. I was going to order a couple of batteryless kits from him.

Haven't had time to listen to the clip Mandy posted, but I'll get to it soon. I've always liked your playing, John.

Sorry I'm late to the party! John Stannard just became one of my favorites! Wow!

A real stylist.

Sorry to revive an older thread, but I just watched the video and he's the living embodiment of tastefulness. You did good, Mandy!

BD, that was a little bit tongue in cheek, my friend...if you do a search you'll see I'm an embarrassingly huge Gatton fan (we own the dudes mailbox - that alone is embarrassing haha!), it wasn't a SERIOUS claim.

1955, I thank you, sir! I'm lucky he puts up with me! :-):-):-)
