A co-worker has a small bodied Les Paul flattop acoustic with a mini HD between the soundhole & bridge. Serial# 383553 with a 2 above it. He got it in about 1973. Was wondering if anyone knows anything about these little gems. He's got a picture on Gibson's facebook fan page. Thanks.....

Some early SST, perhaps? (A quick Google search doesn't show one with a mini-humbucker.)

Aunchaki, I'll have him email me a picture so I can post it here. Thanks

I definitely remember a Les Paul acoustic. Tom Wheeler had a picture of it in his American guitars book a million years ago. Here it is. 1970

I have this book(my second Guitar book, a long time ago ) Remember Martin did the same thing with an 'electric' D-18 (Kurt Cobain/MTV Unplugged show- that guitar was a production model...). What were these guys thinking, putting all these 'holes' into their nice flattops?!!

The Les Paul Jumbo acoustics were only made from 1969-1970. The serial number in the post indicates an earlier guitar - made around 1967 (the "2" stamped above the serial number indicates a factory second). So it would not be the one like pictured in the Wheeler book. I don't have a clue what it might be though.

Gibson, of course, also came out with the the 160E (made famous by the Beatles) in 1954. The first ones had a solid top but feedback was a problem so they quickly went to a laminate top. Great sounding guitars plugged in but not so great when played unplugged.
