I just got the Line6 POD HD Desktop about a week ago and am having a good time with it but, like most modelers I've used, a majority of the presets are just unusable. There are so many strange special effects type things that I can't imagine ever using in a song.

I had the same problem with both the old hardware POD and later with POD Farm software: huge bias toward dirt/grunge/distortion on the presets. I ended up doing a whole lot of tweaking to find four or five sounds that were money, then saved them as user presets. It's worth the time to roll yer own!

I would just start with a Deluxe or Twin and work on those. Most of the canned settings are really just technology demonstrations. I don't think there's a lot of intent for them to be usable except in rare cases (well, maybe a few of the uber-gain patches will appeal to some for regular use). My HD400 had a couple patches called "Whiskey Blues" (Deluxe) and "American Jam" (Twin) that didn't take a lot of messing with to get where I could use them. If your tastes run to Vox, then I think I had to work a bit harder (and probably ended up with something that sounded more like a Fender than a Vox, anyway).
