Problems overcome in a studio

Wrote a song quite a few years ago , just as band was splitting.
So wanted to record it as it was last one before it all fell apart. Bass player couldn`t make it, told us the evening before the morning due in studio, then Drummer "forgot about recording "
So by the time we got drummer sorted we were running late and he played terrible, I made up the bass part on the spot. Timing was all shot to hell ,and drummer buggers off back home.Me and singer are left with a bit of a mess when the Engineer shows us a mix without drums:confused:
As we were a 4pc country band it sounded strange and also influenced my solo as it went more jazzy than country.
Anyway details are , I played a Tokai Jazz (borrowed off a mate) and a tele on neck pickup through a mic`d up Princeton reverb. singer played a Martin D15, whats your thoughts ?
Be as brutal and honest as you want as band have long gone.

That link worked.....

On first listen:

Your voice works very well with this genre and it's well sung.

The mix: to me....at times the lead vocal and the lead axe sounds a tat bit too up front by a db or so but that's splitting hairs.

Cleanly recorded/performed so I think you should be happy with this one.

Keep up the good work.....

Sounds like you made lemonade out of lemons — not easy to do when a studio session goes sour. ... I hear it almost as a swing shuffle, except there's no kit to move it along. If it was recorded to a click, you might consider tacking on some software drums with a brush kit to fill it out.

It would have to be a very strange click track, timing is a bit poor, luckily the lack of drums hides that fact a little.
I really wanted a nice old brush type sound, but I think Drummer was in Bonham mode:wink:
I think I may re record it with new band sometime, as new bassist and drummer are a far better rhythm section.
But I did like the tone of the overall thing.

Great song, really liked the vocal. I agree with the brushes suggestion. I reckon a drummer could add them without too much worry about the timing. Has a good feel and I feel a decent drummer should be able to slot in ok. Good work.

Do you have the separate tracks to work with or did you just get a two track from the studio? If the former then you have something good to work with and add to.

Not sure if seperate tracks are available now, it was a few years ago that I recorded this.
Its funny I remember the recording so well, frustration with band members and me and singer working out ways round it. Even solo was meant to be a keyboard or something. I very rarely play anything like this, and normally wing it during recording hoping for the best. But this time I had to construct a solo, hence the slightly restrained solo. Would love to hear what a good jazz player could play over it.
