KCJonez March 3rd, 2012, 12:09 PM Thinking about getting a strat but find the models hanging on the walls of the local shops have pretty thin necks. Is there a model that's got something more in line with the fender's u-shape?
Thanks in advance.
fretbuzzard March 3rd, 2012, 12:24 PM I know that a while back the music zoo had the custom shop put together some strats with nocaster-profile necks (called them no-neck strats or some such). The cost was pretty eye-watering iirc.
tweeddeluxe March 3rd, 2012, 12:37 PM The Jeff Beck, Clapton and Jimmie Vaughan strats all have thicker necks with the JB being the thickest. I've never played an EC strat, but I've played an earlier JB that was quite chunky. I've heard the later models are not as thick. I have a JV strat with a thicker than average and soft V neck and since they are MIM they're a good buy.

I have never played a Jeff Beck, but I have played JV's and Claptons and in no way do I consider either of those to be thick necks. The "V" adds depth in the back, but they are not big. I has 2 JV necks one I would say is on the small side, the other a little bigger but neither has more mass than an American Standard, the "V" takes a lot of meat out of the shoulders.
Big neck strats I remember playing are the Hot Rod '62 and maybe Eric johnson.

Robert Cray model.
soleless shoes March 3rd, 2012, 06:58 PM I have a CS Noneck that I purchased new from the Music Zoo several years ago. I played a few and went with a NOS with a rosewood board. They're very nice models and the neck is extremely comfortable. I do however prefer the pickups on my CS '56 over the CS 60s that come on the Noneck.
BLAM March 3rd, 2012, 07:49 PM There is/was a 56 CS run with decent sized U shaped necks on them
eno55 March 3rd, 2012, 08:19 PM fenders Kenny wayne Shep model has an fat neck also...
PumpJockey March 3rd, 2012, 08:28 PM I have an American Strat from 95-96 (N5xxxxx serial number) with a very hefty neck. Not sure if it is a "U shape" or a boat neck or what, but it's pretty fat. I like it. In fact, I'd love to know exactly how to characterize it so I could order the same for my t-style builds.
John Thigpen March 3rd, 2012, 09:18 PM Allparts makes a SMNO-FAT (I think that's the model number), which is the same shape as their fat tele neck. I have one, and it's huge. You can get it finished for less than $200, and unfinished for $125 or so. No, it doesn't have a Fender decal, but you can add this to any strat you want very reasonably.
Stratelcaster March 3rd, 2012, 09:47 PM Although more rare than the other signature models listed, The Jerry Donahue Stratocaster has a nice beefy neck. On a side note, out of morbid curiosity at Sam's Club i inspected a guitar that looked like a Strat, said Fender on the headstock, and had a fat neck! After fiddling with it for about 4 seconds i concluded that it was in fact a handy Fender cheese-grater shaped just like a Strat, and not a real guitar.
Cooper Black March 8th, 2012, 09:50 AM +1 on the Robert Cray. I was looking around for a thick neck Tele, and learned about the Robert Cray. I got one recently and am very happy.
NFI - Just saw an Inca Silver one at GC online, used for only 5--. Heck of a deal there ... gotta be some scratches, or some other flaws I'd think. But ... hey ... 30-Day returns at GC.
MahoganyStratDZ March 8th, 2012, 03:42 PM Agree'd the RCs are pretty decent necks.
Maxwell Street March 8th, 2012, 04:02 PM '62 Hot Rod, big C, about .88 at first fret, .98 at 12th, medium jumbo frets, about $1350 new if you look around...

tele12 March 8th, 2012, 05:37 PM A few people mentioned the Robert Cray, nice guitar but something to be aware of is it is a HARDTAIL so there is no trem available.
torresfan March 9th, 2012, 10:48 AM I have a 2005 Jeff Beck Strat and the neck is super chunky, really nice. I believe the newer models do have thinner necks.
noah330 March 9th, 2012, 10:57 AM The Robbie Robertson Strat has a big Broadcaster sized neck:

djphelan01 March 9th, 2012, 02:50 PM I've heard that he KWS and SRV strats along with the older JeffBeck models have chunky necks. You can also replace any neck with a Warmoth boat neck.
S. Plisken March 9th, 2012, 03:30 PM The current Clapton with the maple V is not chunky or thick. I have small hands and it is as easy for me to get around it as the modern C that is on the standard and deluxe.

The Robbie Robertson looks awesome (I want to make a copy!) but I suspect it's too much $$$ for the OP: he found the Music Zoo No-Neck Strats too costly.
To the OP: I'd say the KWS Strat is your best bet, but it's about $1100 MSRP. Most stores will likely sell for less.
