raito February 24th, 2012, 10:48 PM So I was looking up some tab/chords/whatever for a song I know I'd like to play. Sure, I can figure most of it out, but there were a couple spots I where I couldn't quite suss out what was going on.
So I find some tab/chord stuff. It was free and I got what I paid for.
The main chords are a sort of standard I-vi-IV-V thing, though it's got one of those IV-iv bits in the middle. And the bridge is modulated like usual.
But the web chords were D# - Cm - G# (and either A# or B). Gaah! And for good measure, the bridge was given as C - F - G# - B (or A# again).
I suppose it didn't occur to them that there's no D# major on the circle of fifths, or that, even if there were, there wouldn't be a B chord in it (yeah, it's be the A#, assuming that D# was a key). ANd it wasn't nay D# minor, either.
For my part, I transposed it down to C, because playing all those sharp chords on the piano hurts my fingers...
Charlesinator February 25th, 2012, 02:48 PM ??? You post is more or as confusing as the tab site you visited. Clarification is such a wondeful thing. For example ... 1.What song is that you want to learn? You could probably have posted here asking for help and there is a strong likelihood that somebody probably knows the song and cold have helped you through the problem parts. 2. It seems like you are playing this piece on the piano. I could be wrong ... but this is a guitar site. 3. What is the exact purpose of this post? Is it to inquire, enlighten or complain? You don't mention the website either ... I'm sorry I don't want to sound rude or sarcastic, but if I wanted mindless complaining I'd just talked to my lovely wife. Lol!
raito February 26th, 2012, 11:50 PM Charlesinator,
I don't need help playing the song. It might just be me, but reading my post it seems clear I understand what's going on in it.
I thought about putting it as a reply in another thread about the quality or lack thereof found in tabs on the web, but it didn't quite fit there. This is another data point.
And shucks, I thought I was complaining mindfully. I suppose I could have expanded on just why having those chord designations doesn't do anyone any good.
BigDaddyLH February 27th, 2012, 12:04 AM Those chord names would have been easier to read, at least for me if they were done in Eb:
Eb Cmin Ab Bb
Maybe whoever wrote it down didn't like flat keys, but you'd really have to hate them to invent the key of D#.
getbent February 27th, 2012, 09:53 AM you pays your money, you takes your chances...
in this case, free ain't always free....
McGlamRock February 27th, 2012, 02:15 PM I always wonder if "tabs" like that are posted by intermediate level bass players. You know- confusing the bass note as the chord's root note, or just plain writing out a wrong note/chord. Like getbent said: you get what you pay for!

A little knowledge...

tele-rain February 27th, 2012, 04:14 PM I often think of this when going through tab/chords on the web. I'm still very limited in my theory knowledge, so I just end up plugging through chord strums. I have written here before that I'd like to learn to play "the right way" once and for all, but I can't seem to find a good starting point.
More to the OP's point, I wonder if I'm doing myself more damage by just finding random chords to strum, since a good lot of them are incorrect.
raito February 28th, 2012, 11:40 PM Not all the stuff I find out there is wrong. Some is incomplete. Usually, I can figure out what's missing. If you have a tab that's wrong, as in it's not the right notes (not like the problem I described where the notes are right, but the notation is wrong), hopefully it's good enough that it points you in the right direction.
And upon further thinking, there is the outlier case of having a D# key if you modulate to it. Such was not the case for the tab I discussed.
OlRedNeckHippy February 29th, 2012, 08:06 AM Not all the stuff I find out there is wrong.....Yea. I think about 90% of it is correct.
I also think some guys put errors in there on purpose, just to keep us honest.

Very true.
And you're lucky it wasn't a Gospel song, where if you can happen to find any chords/tabs at all....people/haters post the wrong chords/tabs just to throw others off.
