forfunk49 February 24th, 2012, 05:47 AM Hello Friends,
My brother has just become the bassist in my group (TylerWilsonBand.com) and we're looking to get him a new bass as his Fender P-Bass is too long of a scale. (He's small)
He really loves the look, tone, and 30.5" scale of the Gibson EB-3 (or SG bass as they call it now), but we have one fatal roadblock in our quest. He's a lefty. Gibson apparently hasn't made a left handed bass in 20 years and we can't seem to find a decent copy or anything even close.
Does anyone know of a knockoff/replica/tribute instrument that might be available?
Thanks!
Tyler
Tim Armstrong February 24th, 2012, 06:04 AM You could build one, Warmoth sells an SG bass body and they'll almost certainly route it for a lefty.

winny pooh February 24th, 2012, 08:12 AM It's probably the easiest bass to convert to lefty out there......
Otherwise you could try and find an epiphone or ESP sg bass.
How about a mustang/bronco lefty?

They can't advertise Gibsons on their website but they might have some leads or alternatives. They know Lefty's.

Unfortunately, for some INSANE reason, Warmoth makes one but the neck is 34" instead of 30.5 like the SG/EB basses originally were. They won't make a short scale Gibson style neck, and putting their "warhead" short scale neck on an SG body isn't quite what I wanna do.

EB-0s were the shorties the EB-3 was 34" with only a limited run of 30" IIRC.
Your best chance (And it lookslike he's willing tospend good money) would be to find a Luthier to build one.

In actuality Gibson EB-Os and EB-3s were both short-scale. The Gibson EB-3L was full-scale, and produced in much lower numbers than the standard EB-3. Nowadays, the Epiphone EB-O is short-scale and the Epi EB-3 is full-scale.
FWIW, I'm a lefty and play an Epi EB-O upside-down.

Dave W February 24th, 2012, 05:06 PM AFAIK even the original EB-0/EB-3 had to be special ordered lefty. They do exist, although I've only seen one in person, ever.
Fairly easy to have one converted, or learn to play a righty upside down like Ronn.
And Ronn is correct, all EB-3s and EB-0s were short scale prior to late 1969 when the slotheads were introduced, and that was after their biggest sales years had passed. Even then, the short scales were the bigger sellers.
randomhitz February 24th, 2012, 05:37 PM just get an epiphone, get a lefty nut made, and live with the controls on the top.
randomhitz February 24th, 2012, 06:15 PM or left hand hofner mcCartny bass for 419 from guitar center if it's mostly the short scale he likes
grapenehi February 24th, 2012, 07:24 PM I have an old hohner (sp?) short scale sg styled bass... But it's a rightie, and is need of some work... I'll have to get back to you with the model name...

There you go I always thought eb3s were long.
Deaf Eddie February 29th, 2012, 04:16 PM Does it HAVE to be an EB-0 style?
Check out this Ibanez (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass/ibanez-gsrm20l-mikro-left-handed-4-string-short-scale-bass-guitar/h08781000001000?src=3WFRWXX&ZYXSEM=0&CAWELAID=605819309)....
TomE March 11th, 2012, 06:10 PM Hey Tyler,
I thought you may be interested in a guitar I found many years ago.
I believe it is a 1969 EB3 left handed bass with short scale.
A bit rough around the edges but original (except the extra pick ups added at some stage)
A friend had a local shop clean it up check the electrics and restring it (for right handers) since these photos were taken
All the components are as found (I found it in a loft many years ago).
I dont play it and I would like it to go to a good home if you want to make me a decent offer?
Best regards
Tom
Radspin March 11th, 2012, 08:00 PM The bass player in my band is a lefty and he has had good luck searching Guitar Center.com's used section with the keyword "lefty" or "left handed." I like that bass above though! Interesting set of mods.
caferacer March 11th, 2012, 08:05 PM that looks like the ticket
donh March 11th, 2012, 08:08 PM USA Custom Guitars offers any neck as a lefty for no upcharge. No idea if they have short-scale conversion option for bass necks, but it's worth a call to find out! 253-446-4048
howlin March 12th, 2012, 05:07 PM They have many left-handed high-quality basses [& guitars]. The Airline Map (http://secure.eastwoodguitars.com/osc/index.php?cPath=2_61) is a cool short-scale bass IMHO.
I know for a fact that the Classic 4 (http://secure.eastwoodguitars.com/osc/product_info.php?cPath=2_63&products_id=68) is a solid instrument as I had one. Ed Friedland likes them too:
