AJ Love February 17th, 2012, 10:19 PM I was jamming with an older Country musician who said "play it like a Ray Price shuffle"...
Can anyone demonstrate or describe a Ray Price shuffle please? I think I have a general idea but I want to do it right...
thanks!
e-merlin February 17th, 2012, 10:22 PM Think Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces."

Again
e-merlin February 17th, 2012, 10:33 PM Yes! That's it!
Actually, if you slow that down, you have a great case for Ray Price's "Crazy" as opposed to Patsy Cline's version.

With a walking bassline right?
Is there anything in particular about the guitar parts in a Ray Price shuffle that one should know?
Don Miller February 18th, 2012, 02:33 AM Weve been working up a bunch of those country shuffles...If you listen to Buck Owens version of "Close up the Honky tonks" Don Rich played a real interesting counter point to the walking bass...otherwise it seems a real regular rhythm...boom chuck...but of you vary the attack it sounds sloppy...sometimes a variation of the Chuck Berry-ish 5-6 move fits...but you can't play it too hard and snappy or you lose the swing......I used to play with a bass player who loved to write country shuffles in D...and she could walk it in her sleep..I did alot of drop D and Id either do the boom-chuck or kind of a harmony against her her bass line.
Edit: Actually i listened to "Close Up the Honky Tonks" againand for the most part Don Rich doubles the walking bass line....and the rhythm guitar plays a "boom chuck" in a way thats unique to this sort of shuffle...upstroke on the "chuck"...its sort of a tricky style...
eclipse February 18th, 2012, 06:05 AM Gawd, I love country shuffles. Thought this was interesting if you have Band In A Box. You can still listen to the examples even if you don't.

I'm sure it sounds great played OVER a Ray Price shuffle.
tele salivas March 7th, 2012, 06:44 AM Basic rhythm guitar for the Ray Price Shuffle:
-----D-- U ----D-- U---(*)----U-----D--U---
1--------------0---0---(0)-----------0--0--
2--------------0---0---(0)-----------0--0--
3--------------1---1---(1)---- (1)---1--1---
4--------------2---2---(2)----- 2----2--2---
5---------2---------------------------------
6-----0-------------------------------------
Its important to put those ghost strokes (*) in there as that gives you the skip that pushes the next few strokes just a little bit on the beat and gives you the shuffle effect.
twangplank March 7th, 2012, 08:32 AM I play in a band part time that does that style of music. Buck Owens and Price is our main specialty. I love that shuffle style.
DavyA March 14th, 2012, 02:46 AM The verses are 1 and 3 on the Bass and kick drum but then walks on the chorus...at least most of 'em do. I play a lot of this and it's lots of fun!
I just wish there were more places to gig with that music....
pjstyles June 23rd, 2012, 11:15 AM Ray Price has a very identifiable style, which includes a 4 to the bar bass pattern in the verses, and then switching to an 8 to the bar walking bass line during choruses. He is also known for the use of 1 to the 2 chord structures to add dimension and dynamic to his songs. Best examples of this would be "The Other Woman" and "Here Comes My Baby Back Again" Both of these are available on Youtube, and are classic examples of the "Ray Price Shuffle" BTW, for jamming purposes, the best description of a Ray Price Shuffle is a "1-4-5-shuffle with a 2 in the bridge" Good Luck.
jmiles June 23rd, 2012, 06:55 PM Abdo-lutely my favorite beat to play my pedals steels to!
