Listening to Jerry Donahue has inspired me to spice up my (admittedly pretty beginner-level) country picking with some behind-the-nut bends. The trouble is, I'm not sure where to begin.
Striking a harmonic and then adding some vibrato behind the nut sounds pretty neat, but there's only so much you can do with that.
The only real lick I've come up with so far is your standard pedal steel outro:
e---------------0--------------
B---------------0b2------------
G------------2--2--------------
D---2---2h4--------------------
A------------------------------
E------------------------------
It's solid, but pretty generic.
What have you got for me, TDPRI?

Just looked him up on YouTube...whoah. Now there's a guy who knows what he wants to do, and does precisely that. I'm in awe!
Ridge runner...I need a clean pair of britches.

Yeah there's so many great good guitarist out there! Jim's great too..You can always do the Clapton, and that's if you smoke stick you're cig off in there if nothing else
Nasty habit I know.
But hey come to think of it..I think that's how you play like Bobby Bare's "Detroit city" main riff.. Oh there is a tab to behind the nut love on Ultimate guitar.com and you can hear it off of youtube..it's nothing to intense..but it's pretty cool..kind of like a pretty steel guitar type thing..
"Detriot city" lick not sure though..

Behind the Nut Love is beautiful. It's on the to-do list for tomorrow. Thanks!

One last thing on the behind the nut stuff..then I'm out..but if you ever like break a string and it's broke behind the nut..And you don't have a replacement I have taken a pair of needle nose Pliers and retied the string into a knot, and then restring it back into the tuning key, you then stretch the crap out of it,making sure it's gonna stay in tune..it could save a gig!
Ohh and here's a better version of the John 5 thing...that was just an excerpt from his version of "Sugarfoot Rag", but yeah he's got some cool guitarworld lessons on youtube as well.
