Stratocaster Neck Hunt - WARNING: Picky Post

Howdy, folks.

I'm trying to figure out what strat comes with a neck with these specs. Warning: I may sound a bit picky, but it's for a special project.

9.5 Radius
Vintage style neck (ie: truss rod at the heel, 60's logo)
Medium Jumbo frets
Rosewood fretboard
No signature model (ie: don't want john mayer's sig or another artist's name on the headstock)
Must be Fender made

The only ones that really come to mind are the Robert Cray strat neck, (but it has his signature) and the Hot Rod 62' Strat neck (it's out of my price range and the neck is a bit too fat, (but nice!)

Anything come to mind, fellas?

Should investigate Japan a bit further I Suppose. I just read in the past that Japanese neck heels/neck pockets are a bit wider than USA.

Fender Japan ST62

Really? a 9.5" radius and bigger wire? That's awesome. I always wanted the Fender Japan to get some specs like that. When did they change to those specs? This is great, I need to check this out!

The Robert Cray signature (on the headstock) is really quite small and I think it's a great neck so it might pay you to investigate that option further.

The Robert Cray neck is great. I own it. However, I don't want a sig on the neck of this project. I want it to be as vintage as possible. Plus I was never a fan of rocking someone else's signature on my guitar neck. It makes it feel like it's not mine and that I'm trying to be Robert or something. IDK! I want it to be something very personal to me :)

I'm not a fan of signatures either but I made an exception for this one

I don't know what Slapshot is on, but the ST62 does not appear close to these specs. It has a vintage radius AND vintage frets. That's a bummer, I've been waiting for a nice MIJ make like that.

My Fender Japan squire has those spec except a 12 degree radius. Great player though. Have fun, wayne

If you can deal with the overal relic vibe, the 60s Road Worn is fits the bill - and unlike the 50s maple neck does not feature ridiculous fingerboard wear. Not too fat a contour either.

Agreed, the ST62 is great IF you can find a used one that's had a refret. Fender Japan vintage fretwire is miniscule.

The 60's Classic Player model has everything you want.

Actually, just looked and it's 12" radius.

Deleted because I am illiterate (I didn't see you excluded the Hot Rod...)

How do you buy a neck from Fender, I thought you had to bring your unrepairable neck in and they replace it with a neck that is similar to the original. Or are you'all talking about buying necks on E-bay from dissected Strats.

The latter!

60's Roadworn is actually 7.25 radius. But has bigger frets and a RW board.

Not sure there is something around that fits your bill... and budget.

I've started buying aftermarket AllParts necks and am very happy.... but you stated must be 'Fender made'.

Buy the Robert Cray, remove the signature, and refinish it.

Is there anything that fits that list w/ the exception of the frets? If so, get it and refret it.

I agree with Sam!
If the Robert cray is everything you want minus the signature then get rid of the signature!

Plenty of people here can help you figure that out...and well it is a project guitar afterall!

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't covered already in the finely finished section!

Good luck my friend!

Btw I recommend finishing the neck in tru oil...nothing beats that feeling of rubbed on oil on a neck!

Didn't realise that... The larger frets must make it feel flatter in hand. At least mine does to me. Shoulda checked before posting, sorry.

Maybe something from the mid-90s Mexican Deluxe/Powerhouse series? It's a reasonable request but surprisingly hard to come by, by looks of it.

I can deal with the cray neck. It's funny, one time at a geetar shop the guitar tech was like "cool spider logo on the head stock"

I say
"It's actually robery cray's signature..."

It does kind of look like a spider -_-

SamClemons

I would not be embarrased to say I preferred the same neck as Robert Cray.

February 6th, 2012, 11:52 AM
You can always throw a sticker over the signature and be done with it...

I get your pursuit of a non descript neck...you want to be your own player and not some wannabe...that's fine and well...but I don't think anyone here would fault you for having a signature on the headstock...and besides you're not in a cray tribute band or anything...so I say build your project...throw on a neck you already own and that is perfect for you and then play the snot out of it!

Good luck and post pics of your guitar!!!

Yeah, the tall frets make it feel a little different for sure!

Amazing that something that sounds so simple... And something you would think would be common, seems so rare, huh?
