bearcattwang January 31st, 2012, 02:33 PM hey yall give me your opinion on twang King pickups! been thinking about buying a set just wanted to see what if anyone liked them or didnt like em.
ive read the desription of them on the internet but ya never know if they live up to the hype or not.
e-merlin January 31st, 2012, 03:02 PM Yes, they live up to the hype, and they stand up to the boutiques, too. DiMarzio winds up some great "Vintage" style pickups. They ain't just for shredders. Be aware, though, that, just like the originals, the neck and bridge pickups are wound to the same polarity. You'll need to cut the wire from the ground to the cover on the neck pickup, wire in a separate ground wire, and wire the neck pickup backwards if you want to have some hum cancelling properties with this set.
Well, unless you dig the original 50's setup or dig noise.

This is interesting. I have a set, love em, but they happen not to be in a guitar at the moment. Have you done this? How do they sound this way? Wouldn't they be out of phase? I'm tempted to try it.
e-merlin January 31st, 2012, 09:53 PM No, I don't have the guitar anymore. Yes, they sound good. No, they aren't out of phase this way, they are out of phase the other way, which is the way Leo made them in the 50s. For a better discussion of why, you might want to contact Uncle Fezzter, as his pickups are wound to original specs and are not RWRP. It's more of a personal preference and I prefer RWRP, or in lieu of that, at least RP or RW.
bearcattwang February 1st, 2012, 08:32 AM Thanks everyone for your input!!
e-merlin February 1st, 2012, 09:47 AM I need to correct myself. The way they come from DiMarzio, they are wound the same direction, so they are not out of phase. IIRC, they have the same magnetic polarity as well. If you prefer the out of phase sound, you'll have to go through what I described in my first post. It's been a while since I had the set, so I don't recall the particulars other than what I stated earlier.
