No Ultrabeat equivalent in GB ... it does have some "software instrument" drums, though.

The most infuriating thing about GB is the fact it has no provision for mapping midi data from controller knobs.

Its like they left it out for pure spite, it is such a basic feature.

Been there, so I share your sentiment ... but it is after all a freebie program. Once you're hooked, you want to go on to the harder stuff — like Logic! (Pro version now on sale at the app store for $200, the price of Express last year.)

I think Garageband was created for those with little or no recording experience, MIDI mapping might be a little out of the realm of the beginner. You do have the loops and as Woodman said, software instruments that can be triggered by a MIDI keyboard.

To quote someone who thinks otherwise :

"lot's of folks really underestimate GB. Major label albums have been done in GB (Erykah Badu's last one to name just one) and it really is decent platform with better virtual instrument sounds than some very expensive VST packages.

I'm not knocking it. But there are some things that are limiting unless you transfer the project into Logic.

Wait but what is midi mapping?

The HUI(tm) MIDI mapping protocol is an open communications protocol for interfacing between a hardware audio control surface and digital audio workstation (DAW) software. The protocol allows a DAW and a connected hardware control surface to exchange Midi signals that synchronize the states of their (virtual) sliders, buttons, wheels, and displays. The user can write console automation which can then be seen in the DAW.

I've been using garageband for more than 3 years already. For decent beats the only way I have figured out was to either SLOW down the tempo of the beats to make some cooler sounding ones or to use the typing keyboard on software instruments and tap your own beats with your computer. Keep in mind that if you do try to tap the beats there is always some lag and delay and it is just messy, but if you have the time you COULD tap the beats out and since it will be considered a midi track you can edit all the keys that you hit in the Time Flex area towards the bottom. In my opinion I have found that slowing down the tempo of the looped beats is the best way to go. I have a song that I made just in case you wanted to hear a song from garageband with slowing down the beats.
