Never been here at the "Bass place". I always hang around the Tele forum but I need a favor from the Bass players please.....A good friend ( Gary) and former bandmate recently passed away. I got him started on bass over 20 years ago. He played with my band for several years as well as other local bands since that time. He was well respected and liked by everyone who met him. He helped me build my house and refused to take any pay. We worked at night on the house after our real jobs each day. He just wanted some guitar lessons( that turned out to be Bass lessons) as his pay. So that's how this whole story got started..........Very sad that he's gone. We had alot of fun and made alot of music. His wife and my wife are close friends as well. My wife just mentioned to me tonight that Gary's wife is considering selling his bass rigs and guitars. She ask my wife if I would help her put his stuff on CL or ebay. I do alot of that so I told my wife to let her know that I would help in any way I could. She also wondered if I'd be interested in Gary's Fender bass. With heavy heart I said yes let her know I want it with-out even knowing, or caring what it is. Just knowing that it was his would be pretty cool to me. I want to be fair with her concerning the price so if you can look at the photo I pulled of Gary from his bands facebook page and let me know what the bass in the pic is and a a value I would appreciate it. Thanks alot, this is a hard thing for her to deal with....

Sorry for the loss of your friend.

Can't really say what it is with one picture. Looks to me, judging by the gold hardware, and honeyburst finish, that this may be a Fender Custom Shop Jazz Deluxe. Maybe made within the last 3-5 years ?

Sorry for your loss.

It looks like it could be an American Deluxe Jazz Bass FMT or QMT. These were American Deluxe series basses with flamed or quilted maple tops, gold hardware and block inlays. They were around from about 2001-2007. Otherwise they had the same preamp and pickups as the "regular" American Deluxe models of the same year.

If that's what it is, I would guess $1000 or slightly higher, but I really haven't followed the values lately.

Hi, this is a sad story, sounds like a great guy. Ebay is your best best as it my sit on CL for some time. Check the completed listing (you have to sign in to do so) and get a feel for the prices they go for.

Tim, do you have any idea on the model, year, of this bass? Most times you can post a Tele pic up and in 5 minutes you got the entire history of the guitar . Not the case here I guess. She told my wife she wanted to drop it off at our house for me to look at. Maybe once I get my hands on it we can figure out what it is. I'll post more info as I get it.

Also thanks Dave for the input, you may be correct.

Thanks

I looked on the internet, and the American Deluxe Jazz FMT or QMT were introduced in 2001 and discontinued in 2007 or 2008. The bass like what your friend had will fetch about $900-1000 if it was well cared for. I hope this helps. My condolences to your friends family.

Once you have it in hand, the year should be easy to figure out. If it's a post-2000 American Deluxe, as I suspect, the serial number prefix should be ZD and the next digit is the year (ZD1=2001, e.g.).

If it's not an Am Deluxe, there should still be enough info to identify it.

I am thinking around 1000 dollars. Maybe a little more on a good day, maybe a little less for a quick sale. Sounds like a really mint piece, but it is too new to have vintage value and that puts in in competition against someone buying new. I would actually prefer a more standard type Jazz.

Sorry for your loss, man. Must be tough for you and his family to go through his gear and liquidate it knowing it was a big part of his life. I don't envy you.
