What wattage? (Soldering Iron)

Hi, I've decided to build my first guitar pedal kit so I need to buy a soldering iron, and I was wondering if 40 watts was to much?
The reason is that I was thinking of getting this soldering kit... http://www.maplin.co.uk/40w-soldering-kit-399593

Also if I bought just a soldering iron on it's own, what accessories would I need? And if I were to buy a soldering iron on it's own would this be an ok choice to start of with? http://www.maplin.co.uk/25w-soldering-iron-type-xs-4063 (The Ģ11.99 one).

Thanks for the help.

Many times discussed on here....but I'll tell you what I know, and I've been soldering about 45 years or more.

If you plan on doing a lot of soldering, invest in a decent "station" like a Weller or something. Get quality tools...they'll last you forever if you take care of them.

The 25 watt iron should be plenty to build pedal kits, but for guitar rewires and the like you might want a little more oomph on things like the backs of pots, etc.

Basic tools: Soldering iron, solder (60/40 in about .031"), flux, sponge (any clean kitchen sponge), and a solder sucker device. (to fix mistakes, rewires, etc). I've fluxed everything since I learned, because that was how I was taught, and it's worked fine for me all these years...regardless if some say you don't need to...it's darn cheap insurance.

If you don't know how...there are a ton of tutorials on the net...get some junk electronic parts and learn and practice on those before attempting to do so on a kit or expensive parts. You can destroy IC's, Transistors, and PCB traces by applying too much heat to them.

Good luck and have fun.

My dad used to tell me that it is expensive to buy cheap tools.I inherited his Weller soldering station.Itīs still working perfectly today.
