Apogee One users?

Hi all,

I'm thinking about picking up an Apogee One for recording with GarageBand. I was originally looking at the Jam, but that's solely a guitar interface and I'd like the option of recording vocals as well. Anyone have any experience with this unit?

I was thinking about this too, so I'm all ears.

Err, all eyes.

I have the Apogee Duet and an Apogee One. Both have very good pre amps. The One has an external mic that the Duet does not. They are really easy to use. I haven't had any problems, but many have with the reliability of the break-out cables. They are supposedly making them stronger now, but since I haven't had to replace mine I dont know for sure. They seem pricey but the pre amps are critical to good sound and that, in my opinion, is what you are paying for.

The only draw back is that you are restricted to using it on a Mac, though someone has attempted to write drivers for it for Linux.

I bought a portable DVD player case to store my Apogee Duet, it's break out cables, my external hard drives (song data and plugins/loops/samples), firewire cables and iLok when not in use. The Apogee One sits on my desk.

You can also hook up the one to an iPad with a powered USB hub and a connection kit. Double whammy there. I just did it with my one and my iPad. Works well. I have the jam also and it is convenient though.

Sounds promising ... can you share any sample tracks made using the Apogee One?

I didn't even know that but will be trying it soon!

I'll dig up one or record something real quick.

I just rec'd my ONE yesterday, MF has 15% sale on an item at $249 and above. I am just getting my feet wet with recording into GB, as I want to record my originals. I played around with it last night and laid down a few guitar tracks, worked very well and was easy to install, etc. I didn't try the internal mic yet. So far am happy, but I am no expert on interfaces...

Apogee worked very closely with Apple in the devlopment of the One, Duet, all the way to the Symphony. I do wonder why all their interfaces are USB 2.0 and not Firewire?

Re: USB 2.0

I have a few apple computers that do not have firewire. My MacBook and Airbook for example. The more current batch of portables seem to have lost fire wire. Most of the iMac's still have them.

Also, USB is more universal and fast enough so Apogee could with proper drivers be sold into non-mac environments.

At least that is my take on the decision making process from the outside, having run some commercial software companies in the past.

I thought the Apogee Duet (the first one, not the Duet 2) was FireWire. The rest are USB 2.0 though.

I think I remember reading that Apple phased out Firewire in favour of USB a while back. I forget the reason.

Very impressive from such a small unit.

I think mainly it was a cost factor on the consumer grade models, because the average user had no use for it. IIRC, the top end models generally used by working pros still come with FW.

The DVI (video out) ports on the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini are now Thunderbolt ports (http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/) (Wikipedia article here (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbolt_(interface))).

The Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display (store.apple.com/us/product/MC914) (connects to a Thunderbolt port) has "... three USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 port, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and a Thunderbolt port for daisy-chaining additional high-performance devices."

It looks like Belkin is going to release a standalone Thunderbolt dock with the same connections (here (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/13/belkin-shows-off-upcoming-thunderbolt-express-dock/) and here (http://www.belkin.com/pressRoom/releases/uploads/Thunderbolt_092011.html)) sometime this spring. Others will probably follow.

Ah yes, I'd totally forgotten about Thunderbolt ... been hearing about its emergence for a while, but never seen it in action.

So I went to record and my break-out cable didn't work . I didn't want to report back until I had some resolution from Apogee.

I contacted Apogee's support on January 2nd through their website and let them know that the break-out cable for the One had stopped working. I was asked on the support form when I purchased the One, but I couldn't remember, so that is what I put in that box. I receive an email on January 10th with instructions on how to get a new cable. I sent my mailing address to a specific email with a specific subject line. I got confirmation this morning, January 13th, that the new break out cable was in the mail.

They are not validating the purchased date or the cables so this must be a serious problem for them to send out new cables with no questions asked.

I still love my One and my Duet especially since Apogee is standing behind their product.

Wow! This must be why they say, "No good deed goes unpunished."

Just bought the One today to replace the M Audio fast track. Really is an obvious upgrade in sound.

May have to switch to noiseless pickups however...the hum is killing me no matter what interface or pickup position I use. That and get my head around Logic, GB was so much easier.
