I hate pedals!!! But...

Please dont slay me for saying that, but I have never liked pedals as to me they suck the life out of an amp. If I dont like my sound its because I dont have the right amp, pickups etc, not because I am missing a pedal. That is until my recent find, the Rockbox Boiling Point OD.

My current rig consists of a Crook tele, Bogner Shiva amp and Mills Acoustics 4x12 cabinet. Thensound I get out of this rig is, to me, extraordinary. Well recently I decided I need to get some overdriven Fender sounds out of the Bogner clean channel. Owning a 78 deluxe reverb, I realize that the Bog clean channel, though not exact, is very Fender like so if I could find an OD pedal that drove my amp without altering my tone, I would get some great new sounds out of my amp. With little expectation I went hunting. In fact the search went on for 3 months.

I tried so many pedals cheap expensive and everywhere in between, and although many sounded good, none sounded like me amp cranked, rather like a pedal through my amp. That is until I fell upon the Boiling Point from Rockbox. Its so good I bought it without asking the price which by the way is clearly on the high end ($389, though I got it for $319). I know thats pricey for a pedal, but this pedal is the only pedal I will place between my guitar and my amp.

Let me clarify, I have been playing seriously for nearly 35 years and though I am not much of a pedal guy, I love trying them out to see what they might do for me. There are many great pedals, they just arent for me, but now that I have the Boiling Point, I dont know what I did without it. The overdrive is exceptionally versatile, truly embellishing the greatness of your chosen amp without changing its character at all. And finally a pedal that gives the sweetness of a cranked tube amp without having to annoy the neighbors.

Maybe some of you who have played through this pedal will disagree, and if so, I respect your opinion, but I am so smitten with this pedal I just had to share my praises with you. In my opinion this is the best pedal ever built, and 20 years from now tone mongers will be searching everywhere with large wads of cash in hand looking to purchase one of these prestine pedals. By the way, I absolutely do not work for the company. Also, I purposefully did not mention the names of other OD pedals that I tried before purchasing. I dont want to start any arguments here.

I understand the perfect sound is subjective and many of you may hate my sound, but having said that, I cant believe anyone couldnt find a blow their mind sound with this pedal in their chain. If you have any questions about this pedal, I will be more than happy to answer them the best I can. If you want comparisons to other pedals that I may have tried, please PM me for my comparisons.

I dig the pedal. I wouldn't say it is the be-all-to-end-all (in my opinion) but it does what it does very well. I still can't justify the hefty price. I'd like to know the justification of the price. Rare and pricey components?

Glad you dig it! Once I run across one at the sweet spot ($200-ish) I'm sure I'll snag one.

I cant answer as to what makes it more expensive than most other pedals, but to me, knowing that this pedal will be part of my rig for years to come makes it cheap compared to buying a pedal every 6 months because I get sick of them or find another thats a little better. Of course I would have liked to pay $200 for it as well but hey if you find what you like... The biggest selling point for me was its transparency and ability to make my amp sound cranked without making my ears bleed. I am appreciative of your honest opinion though.

Good point! Maybe the boiling point could replace the 3 OD pedals? But them I would need 3 Boiling Points so I could access varying degrees of OD on the fly. :-)

Hey I just ordered a custom shop JHS Klone because I wanted JUST that transparent break-up sound, nothing more. It wasn't cheap either!!

Its a great pedal. Clearly one of the few I listened to more than 5 times before purchasing, and no it isnt cheap. I try so hard not to pay attention to price always hoping the cheap one will make me say wow. But it never seems to work that way (seems we are alike in that). I bet that pedal will be in your board for several decades. Honestly, in a band with 2 electric guitars the JHS and Boiling Point would compliment each other well.

Ok. I gave the Boiling Point a second chance today... and well... It came home with me!! It really does what it does better than most on the market. Sure, how many ways can ya skin a Tubescreamer? Too many obviously, but the Boiling Point is a cut above the rest. Surprisingly it sounds great through my Deluxe Reverb (normal channel of course). And is a perfect compliment to a Maz Jr that friend has graciously loaned me.

Now if the Klone would arrive I THINK I'm done with boost/OD/distortion pedals forever :-) Yes, famous last words!

Good for you. You're armed and dangerous. I still cant get over how great it sounds, and every day I find another setting that just simply sounds awesome. Have fun with it. Im sure your boiling point will be part of your rig for a long long time.

Thank you sir! Indeed I am! I was up bright n early this morning cooking up more ton with it too! Also pleasantly surprised at how well it gets along with other OD pedals. I have it after an AD808 and an OCD then into the BP. All 3 have very unique characteristics. The BP was loving the added gain stages. Granted it was getting a little hairy! I was ready to bag the OCD but I think the 3 can coexist and give me just about any OD tone that I'd ever need!
