45-year-old Fender acoustic still going strong...

...at a Christmas party a few nights ago.

In my constant campaign to set folk music back two generations, I'm still dragging my old Fender acoustic guitars around the folk clubs.

I've got a couple of 1960s Fenders, a Malibu and a Newporter, plus a Villager 12-string. They all get played very regularly, (and not very carefully either), and every week I'm expecting one of them to cave in and implode in a massive shower of sparks and splinters, but so far, so good! They'll probably keep going as long as I do...

Here we are two nights ago, at a Christmas party, both trying to avoid being banjaxed by an errant microphone stand...

Loved it! I just picked up a relatively decent early 70's yamaha recently. I'm looking to play some of the coffee shops soon just to force me to practice something.

Back in the 80's when the reissued the California series I bought a DelMar. It was like a dreadnought with a Stratocaster neck.

A little newer guitar, but an El Rio I have from the California series. Easiest action on an acoustic I have played. Thin body, more of an electric acoustic.

...I used to have one. Had it for years in fact, right up until last month, when I part exchanged it against a brand new Lag Tramontane acoustic guitar. One of those "impulse purchase" things, but I'm pretty much impressed by the Lag and will probably use it later on this week, to play in a pub.

Thanks for posting the pictures of the other Fender acoustics. I've seen some of these new Malibu and Kingman models on the web, but I haven't had an opportunity to try them out

I just ordered a Kingman SCE from Sweetwater, can't wait for Wed/Thursday to get here!!!

...but I'm pleased to say that my old Fender Malibu is still hard at it.

It got played three times this past weekend and once earlier in the week, too. It also got used on a recording session last month, so it sees plenty of action.

As you can see from this clip, taken on Saturday morning, in a very wet tent, it doesn't get treated very carefully:-

Well Jack, some of those old Fender acoustics seem to live forever. Here's a picture of my old '81 F-65 that I just sold not more than two months ago. It still looked, played and sounded as good as the day I bought it. Always said I'd never sell it, but a friend of mine was in love with it and, since I no longer played it, I let it go to a good home where it'll get some play time.

I have the late 80's - 90's version of those guitars called the San Luis Rey. Bought it NOS in 1994 and it has been my lone acoustic for live and recording for the last 18 years. Outstanding guitar, the finish has tobacco'd nicely, and is just one of those guitars that will likely go to my grandkids one day.

...is a nice long time Chud, to have had a guitar. After that length of time it really does become part of the family. All the more so if it is your only acoustic guitar.

Looks like you've kept it on pretty good shape. Hope it'll still look good in another 18 years.

He, he, by that time, if it hasn't imploded by then, my old Fender Malibu will be a pensioner...
