IC placement

Hi guys-

Feeling a bit stupid here. I have an IC (4093), and am not sure which way to orient it. The actual chip has a semi-circle divot on the one side, and a full circle indent on the other side. Which side do I orient with the square block on the layout? I usually just match the side with some sort of indentation with the square, but on this IC I have 2 types of markings? Please help.

Thank you very much for your time.

That's nothing to feel stupid about. These markings aren't intuitive, you have to know what the manufacturer is trying to tell you. The best way to know without having to ask someone is to find a datasheet for the component you have a question about. For this part, I would google "IC 4093" and click on the Jameco.com link. I avoid links like datasheetarchive.com. Manufacturers and distributors (digikey, jameco, fairchild, etc.) tend to provide better links to the correct information.

Sometimes it takes a bit of looking to find exactly what you're looking for, like in this case, the answer to your question is on page 9 of the datasheet, but the layout for these datasheets are pretty consistent and you won't have to read all nine pages to find what you're looking for. In fact, I spend about 10x as long writing this as I did finding the answer, which is: the semicircle side.

You didn't happen to post the same question on diystompboxes, did you?

Thank you so much justin.ray, that's a huge help!
Haha yeah, I did. I didn't know where the question was best suited, and I was panicking. Anyway, I really appreciate all the help on these forums... goodness knows I need it!
