Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find what I'm looking for with the search. There are so many OD / Distortion / Fuzz pedals and clones out there, I thought it might help me make sense of them all by understanding the components used to create the distortion.
For example, I know that fuzz is generally created with either silicon or germanium transistors? And the classic TS style OD is from an Op-Amp? What other examples are there, and can you effectively 'sort' distortion types by component?
i.e.
Germanium transistor >> Fuzz Face & similar
Silicon transistor >> ??
Op-Amp >> Tube Screamer & similar
Diode clipping >> ??
FET, JFET, etc. >> ??
others?
Appreciate the input!
