Drop Top A/B... which side to choose?

another A/B thread....

I've got a 10mm cut timber "slab" to use as a drop top for a tele...

one side has that natural, exposed, fence post grey look and the other side is the redder fresh cut wood...( Blue Gum )

I can't decide whether to do a fresh wood type finish, sanded and polished,etc..

or use the old weathered side as is, oiled up perhaps or clear to seal it... it's fairly flat/smooth..

the grain changes with the 90 deg turn...

Go the red side!!! I've just done a neck with a red/blue gum fret board and it comes up really schmik with a couple of coats of tru-oil and armour all. A nice red body what could beat that?

First pix is still on the radius jig and second is on the neck. It really did only have 2-3 coats of TO + the Armour all needs a clean up again before I fit it but a top surface for a FB.

go the maroons, eh dave?...

yeh, the timber comes up, ok... I've got a few tree slices to pick from for a top..

I'm going to chamber out a cheap body and put some of blue gum on top...

I also would choose the red side, but you will have to plane off the back side prior to joiuning to the base. And it may be the real winner.

BTW: You guys Down Under have such different and beautiful woods to choose from.

I like the fresh-cut red side... but the other could be interesting, too!

i'd go with the grey side, more original imho. i guess you'll need to plane both sides anyway. do that and see what comes out.
enjoy!
