Waylon played bass for Buddy Holly and later, with Johnny Cash. Now I know he played electric bass guitar, not an upright but does anybody know anything about his technique?
Pick? Fingers? Both? Just what was his style like?

I knew he played bass for Buddy Holly but I didn't know he played bass for Johnny Cash. I heard Johnny Cash tell a story once where his guitar player was sick. (Bob Wooten or Luther Perkins not sure which.) Cash called Waylon for help in finding a temp. Waylon himself showed up and worked the show or shows.

Yeah, that's the time when he played bass for Johnny. But what about his technique anybody?

the story waylon told about his bass playing with Buddy Holly was that... he didn't really play bass, but Buddy needed him and he wanted the job so he took it. The first few gigs he layed back and played softly.. finally in a gig, he was feeling good and turned up a bit.. the crowd was enthusiastic, as usual, and loud... Buddy turned, smiling and said something to Waylon... Waylon interpreted it as being praise and so he turned up again..

Buddy turned again, saying something, so, waylon again, turned up... Finally, Buddy came up to him and yelled in his ear "turn that damn thing down you sound like crap"

and that is Waylons story (with cleaned up language) about his own bass playing...

Nice self-deprecating story from Waylon there. Do you have a source for it?

He also used to say that the Buddy Holly gig was the first time he ever played bass and that after a week he finally realized it was the same 4 lower strings as a guitar... Source: his autobio if I'm not mistaken...
