Squier Affinity P Bass rebuild.

I haven't been on the TDPRI for awhile but recently completed a project that I wanted to share with this great group. I wasn't sure if this should be in the build thread or the bass thread so moderators please move if necessary.

A teaching colleague and I were talking about guitars and basses several weeks ago and he made a comment about not caring for his "ugly red guitar". I suggested that if he didn't like the body, perhaps he should change it and he asked "Can you do that???"

It started out as a red Squier Affinity P Bass. I bought a two foot chunk of ash and a two foot chunk of mahogany and had a student in the carpentry program at the school where I teach glue up a body blank. I teach a course that uses CNC machines and made him a custom body very close to the original shape. Attached are the before and after pictures.

Two alterations I made were: 1) there is no pickguard so the volume and tone controls are inset into the body by one tenth of an inch, and 2) the input jack is mounted on the edge of the body using one of those football-shaped chrome jack plates.

We still need to do a proper setup on the guitar but the owner is very happy with the end result (and as the builder, I am too!).

Cheers,

Gord

Reminds a bit of the 1980s Dusty Hill basses (except no P51 headstock).
Pot position and simplicity ...

If the ash part was smaller (more narrow) and the mahogany part was bigger / larger, I would swear that this is a end 1970s or early 1980s body (copying Alembic basses) ...
This was the time when I started making music and these finishes were really "in"!

A German saying is: "You can't make gold out of *****" ...

The Squier necks are definitely no *****! I love them - even of many cheap Squiers! But his rebuilt Affinity is definitely gold!

Great work!
