Either Lead Bass Playing or detuned Baritone...

Working out of the key of G nonetheless, it would require a Baritone normally tuned B-B or A-A to be dropped G-G.

To my ear it actually sounds like someone playing a Jazz Bass through a guitar amp, but that's just me.

It's cool regardless, so I figured I'd share.

Great allround song, if you ask me.

Sounds like a 6 string bass to me - basically the same as a baritone but designed to be tuned E to E (whole octave below regular guitar). Guitar spacing between strings and a 30.5" scale.

Originally introduced by Danelectro in about 1956 and later Fender brought out their version - the Bass VI.

Not sure when the track you posted was recorded but Pete Anderson (who played on a lot of Dwight's stuff) is often credited with playing 6 string bass on his recordings.

Definitely a 6-string bass, too twangy for a Fender, some kinda Dano or Dano-ish. Always popular in (real)Country music.
