For some reason they just look like jazz basses to me (not a bad thing at all)... I know they don't REALLY look like them, but I can't get it out of my head. Maybe it's the lower part of the body going more to one side? They look awesome though!

Really cool.
I'd never heart of yellowheart wood before.
Are there other shades of "heart" wood, too?

How are you cutting the contours? With a rasp/spokeshave? Some other magic?

You guessed it. I clamp it down to a table and draw out the depth and width of the contours with a pencil and rasp the edges down until they meet the lines. Then I sand them even. Sanding scratches are a pain to get out of these woods because they are so dense.

There is yellowheart, purpleheart and redheart. Here is redheart. It's hard to find in any useable width for a body but for a neck...

This will be the neck to the swamp ash/ maple top body. Thinking about spraying it a black to red burst to match the neck.

Tell me more about those "Charlie Christian 'buckers". They look awesome!

The Charlie Christian humbuckers were custom wound by Pete Biltoft of Vintage Vibe. They are a riff on the idea of Seymour Duncan P- Rails. Except the rail coil is wound to sound like a Charlie Christian instead of a Fender single coil.

The other coil is wound like a P90. There are two dpdt on- off- on coils that toggle between the Charlie Christian coil, P90, and series humbucker. They are very hot in humbucker mode at 11.7 and 14.6K for the neck and bridge respectively but still sound nicely complex because of the mismatched coils.

They also contain composite magnets, basically an alnico 2 magnet for the rail coil and alnico 5 for the P90 coil.

Just waiting on some hardware to arrive so I can put these guys together. I'll let you know what it all ways in total. Don't be surprised if it clocks in close to or over 10 lbs.
