AJ Love December 2nd, 2011, 11:52 AM I'm wondering if someone could please explain/transcribe the fills that Redd plays in "Truck Driving Man", you can hear them in the first verse here around 0:06 as well as around the 2:02 mark ...they are Triple-Stops I believe or Double-Stops ... for some reason they are eluding me, but are probably a lot simpler that what I thought

jbmando December 2nd, 2011, 12:14 PM Got it AJ. Video to follow.
jbmando December 2nd, 2011, 12:22 PM Try this. Hope it helps.
Correction:
On the second lick, instead of of hitting xxxx12-11> xxxx11-10 ~ xxxx10-9, just go xxxx12-11 and slide right down to xxxx10-9. Don't articulate the middle chord there.

E6.....I think he is just sliding 6ths around ... with this grip....
he lays off the 6th sting on the slides
jbmando December 2nd, 2011, 01:03 PM h, his hand is at the 9th fret for the first one. I don't think he does that here.
gatorbrow December 2nd, 2011, 01:16 PM Would you happen to know what chords he is using? I believe the song is G-C-D, but it does not look like he is using standard bar chords?
historicus146 December 2nd, 2011, 02:15 PM He slides the sixth chord around ... I provide the E 6th to demonstrate the grip.
daves561 December 2nd, 2011, 02:59 PM jbmando's video has everything you need. They're playing in E, and when they move to the A, Redd plays an A6, by way of an F#m triad on the top three strings, 11-10-9. When they move to the B, he does the same thing, just up two frets.
I personally don't think the A6 voicing works well there. The A functions as dominant to my ear, and the 6 (F#) clashes with the b7 (G) that I want to hear.
The B6 is even dicier, but he doesn't hang out on it nearly as long. He uses it as a passing tone or a sequential idea (as opposed to the earlier A6 where he lands squarely on it), and then rightly outlines the dominant voicing by sliding down to the A-C# double stop, which nicely showcases the b7 and the 9 of the B chord.

Yes, but not on the licks specifically requested by the OP.
jbmando December 2nd, 2011, 04:07 PM Would you happen to know what chords he is using? I believe the song is G-C-D, but it does not look like he is using standard bar chords?
In this case the song is in E instead of G, so the chords are E -A- B, employing various versions of dominant 7th and 6th chords for each one.

jbmando December 2nd, 2011, 04:36 PM Yes, those are cool, but they aren't what Mr. Volkaert is playing at :06 and 2:02 of the video posted by AJ Love. The index finger of his left hand is clearly at the 9th fret for the beginning of those licks. I slide the 6th around for swing licks all the time, but Redd didn't do it here.

Thank you VERY much! I really appreciate it.
It really does seem a lot simpler than I was trying to make it out to be, I suppose the biggest challenge is getting the timing exactly right the way Redd plays it
Are those licks a signature part of the original song? I couldn't find a Buck Owens version with those licks in it
AJ Love December 2nd, 2011, 06:21 PM Cool versions here by Buck Owens, but without those licks

Here's JD Simo with Don Kelly ripping through Truck Drivin Man at warp speed (!), and he includes those licks in the 2nd verses (they play it in the key of G)...but for all I know he got those licks from Redd (Redd does play this song on his DVD)

jbmando December 2nd, 2011, 06:36 PM Nah, they're just improv fills by Redd, I'm sure.
gatorbrow December 2nd, 2011, 07:40 PM Thanks for the information. It is very helpful. I have the Tele Twang Dvd, which I am wearing out. I wish it had the chords/changes for the songs on the performance side. Most are I-IV-V, but the actual chords would be great.

If you know what I IV V stands for you can play the songs in any key you want. Can you listen to a song and be able to figure out what key it is in?
historicus146 December 2nd, 2011, 07:56 PM You seemed to have missed part of my tab..
I have him sliding into the 9th fret in one of the instances....

Most commonly I've heard the song in the Key of G
I [G] stopped at a roadhouse in [C] Texas
A [G] little place called HAMBURGER [D] DAN'S
I [G] heard that old jukebox a-[C] playin'
A [D] song called the Truck Drivin' [G] man.
Redd's version in the Key of E
I [E] stopped at a roadhouse in [A] Texas
A [E] little place called HAMBURGER [B] DAN'S
I [E] heard that old jukebox a-[A] playin'
A [B] song called the Truck Drivin' [E] man.
gatorbrow December 2nd, 2011, 08:20 PM Thanks. I usually play it in G, in almost a bluegrass style, but I would love to be able to play more of a western swing style. It is tough to sing it and play more than cowboy chords.
Side note: I also love the fact that in the first clip, Redd is playing a Peavey Solid state amp. Loud and clean!

Dude, I don't want to argue with you. The notes Redd plays are xxx11-10-9, and you didn't put that anywhere. Please. I showed on the video what he's doing. I agree that the "sliding sixths" are cool but he didn't do them in this clip. Can we be done now?
AJ Love December 3rd, 2011, 12:02 AM here's is a couple of takes on ways to accomplish this
Thanks for the Tab...its cool to have a few different ways of looking at it. I see you included the way Redd did it in the video as well as another option. Thank you

This is the 1954 version -buck owens on backup vox/ - written & recorded by Terry Fell.
Cool stuff, jbmando -thanks for showing that lick!
