Here is a longer video showing how I install bindings.

thanks for the tutorial...how did you trim the binding down flush with the front and back faces?

I used my orbital sander and took it down flush.
Since the wood was raw I wasn't concerned about scratches.
I was careful not to use too much pressure though.

Nice video, the one thing I have started to use instead of the blue tape is that clear packing tape with the treads imbedded in it, it does not break. What I do is precut a bunch of 4” pieces and stick them on my saw fence rail. About that gel glue, I do notice you not wearing any cloves is fingers sticking to stuff a problem like regular super glue? Dose it expand like gorilla glue? I’ve never used it myself but it looks interesting might have to try it. Myself I’ve really got into wood bindings, just the fun of making my own.

Do you use heat or anything to help bend the tight radii on the horn and around the neck pocket? Its my experience that if you bend colored plastic too much it will start turning white unless you heat it and make it more pliable.

I used a heat gun on my binding job, a little goes a long way. You could probably get the same results with a hair dryer.

If you can't find any black/cream/black pickguard material you could probably laminate your own using acetone to adhere the layers together.

I do binding almost exactly like in Bill's video. You can see
from the video that the blue tape is hardly needed -- he is
holding the binding down long enough for the glue to set.
After I put glue down for a section I count to 30 and then
put tape on for insurance.

With thick super glue, if you apply the glue carefully you can
keep your hands almost completely glue-free. I don't think
it expands as it cures. If it does, it's not noticeable.

Wood binding sounds nice! I'd like to try this too, although
I'm not as ambitious as you -- I'm planning to buy the binding.

I prefer gluing with acetone after a nasty incident with free flowing CA. If I'd used the gel first time out, I'd probably still be using it.

The downside to acetone is the setting time does require the tape to act as a clamp. But that's about the only downside I've come across.

I used the binding cement from StewMac. Its a bit more forgiving when it comes to drying time, but I feel you have to use a good bit of the stuff to get a good bond Might have helped if I'd roughed up the joining edge of the binding as Bill suggests. I had seepage at a couple of spots too. I used a lot of tape because of the slower drying time of the cement, I'd say twice as much as used in the video.

I may have to try using CA or "binding shavings dissolved in acetone" as an adhesive on my next binding job, which is coming up very soon.

I love Bill's tutorials. Keep up the good work.

You don't need to dissolve bindings for the gluing action, straight acetone does it fine, but dissolved binding is good for repairs.
