You know it, I am jealous of your feet and sawdust, no shop in this rental we are in...

But, we looked at a house today and making an offer tomorrow:

Look at the nice building at the back of the property, what would I do in there I wonder...

You are getting me excited with this paisley build talk...

O... I see....

When you said rainbow paisley, I had something in mind that looked absolutely terrible- a rainbow striped pattern with black paisley outlines on it. Yuck.

But what you have picked looks great. Either of those should look awesome. What color are you gonna use for the 'burst sides?

robt57 thats the size of shop i dream of having! good luck man hope u get it!

danny hojo the burst will either be black w/ a white pin stripe on the top, silver, or grey. im contemplating doing a tummy cut on the back. so idk yet if ill put the fabric on the back yet...

when i wrote that reply i had not read ur thread yet.

where did u get ur poly-cril? what u did with ur finish is exactly what i was planning to do with my project.

do u think it would be possible to put a round over on the body after the fabric was glued on? like a 1/8th round over so nothing to dramatic.

I'd want to test that on a scrap, hate to see a pull and have to start over.

I am not going to do it the same way on the next one.

i glued up some test pieces of the fabric using tightbond finish and trim glue and a clear gel craft glue.

the tightbond seemed to absorb to much into the fabric itself.

the clear gel seemed to have the best adhesion and it didnt seem to soak up into the fabric at all. ( if it did i couldnt tell)

robt57

I rolled tight bond on top after laying the cloth down while still wet when I did mine FWIW.

Got the house with the shop under contract last night, so maybe soon I will be spraying some clear on some bodies.... ;)

the fabric that im using in a cotton and poly blend. 80/20 i think.

today i went back over the test pieces and saturated them with their respecting glues to c how the fabric reacted to being totally immersed in glue.

congrats on the house! hope u can get up and running soon!

After a few tests I decided 'any' stretch the material would/could allow was going to not be a material I'd use FWIW.

genie_V

the fabric i chose doesnt stretch... i guess unknowingly i helped myself. lol. im gona go check on my test pieces. and report back later tonight.

I've done tests, and when I finally do mine, i'll be saturating the cloth with sanding sealer, and laying it on. after testing with modge, weldbond and shellac, that seems the best, but with the dip method I am about to pioneer, it kills off the potentia of bleeding, because, well it's all equally bled. Stretchy fabrics, doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

a little update on the tele, i had a tearout when flush trimming the top to the body. its been successfully glued back on and filled. next ill be able to thickness sand the whole body!

on a side note i made a trip to the nearest woodcraft and i picked up some beautiful white ash for another build that im planing out right now.

its been hard the last few weeks to get any shop time in. thursday night i got a 4" joiner and a really solid delta table saw out of the late 60s! it weighs like 200lbs. itll work for another 50 years!

so im pretty much set with tools for the mooment.

yesterday i was able to get the maple cap planned to thickness and now the body is
1.75" thick! today later today im gona finish sand the edges and try to do the round over if i have enough time.

ill post pics tonight or tomorrow.

lucretia: the body was a little more that 1 3/8'' i really didnt like how thin the body was... i only added 3/8" of material to the body. i really like the weight now. it was just to light before.

this post will be a pic up date and a progress update.

the finger is all healed up now! just a descent scar left to remind me to be more careful and to be thankful to have all my finger tips.

srry ive been away from the thread for so long. works been crazy these last few weeks.

ive come to a slight halting point in the build. simply put i need a neck and since money for a neck isnt in the budget at the moment.

i want this build to be done right so im waiting to get the neck before i do any major routing on the body ie. pickups bridge and neck pocket. and i dont have the tools or time for neck building at the moment.

this is going to be a slow build...

hopefully i will have a better work schedule by the 2012 build challenge. i have another build that i came up with during a fevery 3 day bug that is going around and the build even passed my 3 day rule of decision making!

i promise to update this thread with every bit of new progress on my build no matter how long its going to take.

ROTFLMAO! A few years back had a new guy join our team in construction. Showed up with a "skil" saw with the gaurd removed. I made a joke that using that saw must take some "Skill" or something like that and ultimately told him to don't use that saw on the job without the gaurd because it's not safe. He jumped back at me that he's been doing this for years and to pretty much ****. A couple days later dropping some decking on a roof and I hear from the other side a blood curdling scream. Yep, you guessed it. Mr. I am a pro ran the saw through the top of his leg cutting a piece of wood. Moral of the story, when using tools that can cut the crap out of you. Better safe than sorry.

To the OP, looking forward to seeing this job completed. Nice work and protect thy fingers.

yeah, i am a bit of a girl around anything that can remove my fingers. iv cut my self bad enough in the kitchen. hah.. not the shop, guess i better start acting the same way around knifes.. i have this bad habit of keeping all my objects razor sharp ever since i picked up the hobbie of hand forging knives.. go figure.. moral o fthe story sharper knife is not always a safe knife as the saying goes. lOL... good luck on the build.

today i was able to get a trussrod for my neck! idk if its the right size tho...

is 17-1/4" to big? it ended up being only $10.25 and i can always trade it out for a smaller one.

im thinking for the neck i might try my hand at a 3L+3R more of a classical style that the traditional tele style.
