I'm doing my first pickup swap on my own, putting a set of custom shop texas specials in my tele. When I took the pickups out of the box I noticed there is a rubber band around the coil on the neck pickup, is this to be taken off or stay on?

Remove, probably there to hold the lead wire when it was wrapped up for shipping.

Great choice on a pickup set !!

yeah, after I posted that I couldn't think of a good reason why it would be there so I took it off. I have them in my MIM BSB FSR and love the sound they get so I bought another set for my 69 thinline I'm putting together. Then I think i'm going to throw a bigsby onto one of my teles, just can't decide which one yet.

Good deal. Do you have a 4 way switch with either one ?

I had the same question about the rubber band on my CS Texas Specials so I contacted Fender and this is their response:

That is a remnant of some older packaging that we did and isn't meant to be there. I is not hurting anything to be on there.

The only Texas Specials we make are from the custom shop but they don't all get the custom shop sticker.

Well these days they put pickups called Texas Specials in the American Special Teles that are different from the Custom Shop models. The polepieces are not staggered and the neck pickup does not have a 3rd ground wire.
